The Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Dept. and Rescue Squad Inc., Co. 6, is located in Calvert County Maryland approximately 5 miles north of Prince Frederick. As is the case with many communities, Huntingtown residents felt a need for their own fire and rescue service. Citizens got together and on February 24, 1972 the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc. was chartered.

Local firefighters and citizens worked weekends and holidays to construct the firehouse. It is located on MD Route 524 in the heart of Huntingtown's business district. Most of the labor was free and many of the building supplies were also donated. The entire building was built for under $70,000.

The first piece of fire apparatus was a 1961 Ford/American La France purchased from the Forestville Volunteer Fire Department. The 750 gpm pumper with a 500 gallon booster tank cost $12,000. The money was raised through donations.  The first ambulance was a 1968 Oldsmobile that formerly served the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad. The departments auxiliary paid for the ambulance.

The first call for help came on October 15, 1974, an emergency transport to University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. The first fire call came on October 23 for a brush fire on Route 4 north of Huntingtown. During the first three months of operation, 23 fire and 76 EMS calls were answered.

Today Huntingtown has 2 class A engines, a tanker, 2 brush units, 2 ambulances (1 ALS), a heavy duty squad and 2 Suburbans. The department responded to 2611 calls in 2011. Huntingtown protects 45 square miles between the river and bay, and sits between Prince Frederick, North Beach and Dunkirk.

Funding for day to day operations is provided by Calvert County but apparatus is funded by both the County and department. This is accomplished mainly through the Corvette Contest. To date the Huntingtown Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad Inc. has contributed well over $500,000 to the purchase of new apparatus.
