Gourmet Night
Description
Gourmet Night is the annual student-run signature event of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. Since 1974, Gourmet Night has offered an unforgettable evening of exquisite dining—all student-planned and executed. It has become Hilton College's most treasured tradition and the "stage" on which we showcase student talent.
Over a one-year period, student leaders plan every detail of a gourmet dinner for 360 and lead a service team of 300 student volunteers, wowing guests with their skills in culinary arts, event planning, beverage management and service direction. From theme to budget to menu and night-of logistics, a student general manager directs the entire production, which includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, multi-course gourmet dinner with wine pairings and live entertainment.
As part of two semester-long classes in Gourmet Night management (HRMA 3384/4384/6384), undergraduate and graduate students interview for the coveted position of general manager and as managers in the areas of event management, human resources, silent auction, marketing, food & beverage service, and culinary. The Gourmet Night Executive Committee selects the new student management team three weeks after the event, which is held every year in late March or early April. Those who are chosen as student leaders enroll in the Gourmet Night classes led by Erin Oeser, executive director of the event. Under the leadership of each new student management team, volunteer course captains, wine stewards and servers execute the event with precision and always receive a standing ovation from a ballroom brimming with appreciative guests, many of whom were involved in Gourmet Night when they were students here.
Not only does Gourmet Night showcase the skills and knowledge of Hilton College students, but proceeds from ticket sales and the silent auction benefit the College's educational programs and scholarships.
