The High Point Public Library Plaza will hold its Grand Opening on Saturday, April 28 with something for everyone - food, music, entertainment and the opening of this year's High Point Farmers Market! This event is free and open to the public. The first annual Guilford Creek Week is devoted to promoting water quality and stream health, with several fun activities throughout the week of March 15-25. Join us for the kick-off event on Saturday, March 17 at Armstrong Park here in High Point. There will be water education, a scavenger hunt, a creek-crawl, live animals, stream exploration, recycling education and games! This is a free, family and dog-friendly event!
John Russell, former teacher, coach, Dean of Students and Director of Athletics at High Point's Penn High School, was the first Black basketball official for the Atlantic Coast Conference. He is a member of the The CIAA, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and Greensboro Sports Commission Guilford County Sports Hall of Fames! #BlackHistoryMonth

CONGRATULATIONS to Heather Richardson on her first Olympic medal!!! Heather and #TeamUSA won the bronze in the speed skating team pursuit competition, edging out Canada by less than half a second! She becomes the first High Pointer to win a medal in either the Summer or Winter Olympics! Go Heather!

For 25 years, various groups and individuals sought to rename a High Point street for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In 2015, the Planning & Zoning Commission approved the renaming of Kivett Drive to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The change was celebrated with a symbolic sign unveiling following the annual MLK Day Parade in January 2016. #BlackHistoryMonth
Dr. Samuel E. Burford was principal at Penn High School from 1933 until the school closed in 1968. He then went on to T.Wingate Andrews High School, where he became the first black principal at a predominantly white school in the state. He later became the first black High Point City Councilmember. #BlackHistoryMonth
