Home Page - Discover Hidden Treasures!

During the Month of May, over 40 communities across the 994-square-mile Freedom’s Way area, home to over 750,000 people, will offer free, public programs featuring “hidden treasures” in their towns. The many fun and creative activities will enable residents and visitors of the region to explore the nature, culture, and history of Freedom’s Way’s communities. Participating communities and organizations have selected “hidden treasures” that tell exciting or unexpected stories from its history and will share its story with the public. “Treasures” featured will be objects held in local collections, public monuments, buildings, and landscapes. Events scheduled for Groton are the following: 1. The Essential Honeybee. Reservations required. Groton Public Library, 99 Main St., Tues. May 2, 7:00–8:30 PM. Learn about the vital role of the honeybee in our environment with expert Kenneth Warchol, Worcester County Bee Inspector. With honey tasting! Space is limited. Brought to you by the Groton Public Library. 2. Birds and Nature Walk. Nashua River Rail Trail, Station Ave. parking lot, Sun. May 14, 8:30–10:30 AM. Join birding enthusiasts Russ and Wanfang Murray for a spring bird and nature walk along the Nashua River Rail Trail. Brought to you by the Groton Trails Committee. 3. Footprints of the Glaciers. Williams Barn, 160 Chicopee Row, Sun. May 14, 8:00–11:00 AM. Moderate 5-mile hike includes climbing Groton’s highest drumlin (and viewing several others in the swarm), traversing eskers, and passing by bedrock outcrops and vernal pools. Brought to you by Groton Trails Committee 4. What Glaciers Left Behind. Groton Town Hall (start location), 173 Main St., Sat. May 20,| 9:00–11:30 AM and Sun. May 21, 1:00–3:30 PM. An interactive Geology Bus Tour of Groton’s glacial features for geology enthusiasts of all ages. Space is limited. Must pre-register at geologybustour@gmail.com. Funding provided by Groton Trust Funds. 5. A Challenge to a President in a Divided Nation. Boutwell House, 172 Main St., Sat. May 20, 1:00–3:00 PM. Historian Brian Bixby will talk about the actions that brought about the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson and the role of Groton’s George Boutwell in those proceedings. Self-guided tour afterwards. Brought to you by Groton History Center. 6. Gifts of the Glaciers: How Glaciers Guided Our Natural and Human History. Nashua River Watershed River Resource Center, 592 Main St., Tues. May 23, 7:00–9:00 PM. Learn how Groton’s geographic location and the Ice Age glacier created a rich biological environment, unique in Massachusetts, as told by local experts Robert Pine, Geologist, and Michael Roberts, Archaeologist/Historian. The Council on Aging (COA) will be holding informational sessions about articles 9 & 10 set to be voted on at the Spring Town Meeting. Article #9 is in regards to the purchase of the Lawrence Trust Land on Farmers Row. Article #10 is design money for building a senior center. The Town Meeting Senior Center Review Committee will be COA Feasibility Study will be available to answers questions and take feedback during these sessions. Sessions will be held at below places and times. Charter Review Committee

The Charter Review Committee will be holding two public meetings to present proposed changes to the Town's Charter. The meetings will take place on Wednesday, April 5th 2017 at 10:00AM-12:00PM and 7:00PM-9:00PM in the 2nd Floor Conference Room at Town Hall. The proposed changes will be presented at the Spring Town Meeting on April 24th, where a vote will be taken to adopt the proposed changes. The public is encouraged to attend and ask any questions they may have about the proposed changes.
