Morning Garden
Description
The Unification Church Retreat House located in Gloucester, MA. A beautiful view of the harbor, extensive grounds, and a rich history rooted in the ocean. The Unification Church, under the guidance of its founder Rev. Sun Myung Moon, purchased this property in 1980 from the Catholic Church, who had been using it as a convalescent home for its clergy since 1936. Known as the 'Cardinal Cushing Villa,' the house was donated by the heirs of John Hays Hammond, Sr. who had constructed his summer mansion here in 1905. He built the current structure on the foundation of a previous home which burnt down in 1878. The property was originally called 'Lookout Hill' where the very first summer home of Gloucester stood, built by George Hovey in 1845.
