Dear Parent/Guardian(s) of Students in Queen Bee Schools: Our hearts are heavy with the terrible tragedy that affected the families of students in Parkland, Florida. As a result of this most recent school violence there has been an ongoing national discussion about school safety issues. The purpose of this letter is to share with you information about our efforts to continue to provide your children with a safe and secure school environment and a request for you to partner with us on sharing the message of how important your child is in our safety plan. First and foremost, you need to know that the safety of our students and staff is a primary focus and receives a great deal of attention and resources. Here are some of the steps we have taken to increase the safety of our schools: • Development of a comprehensive Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) that provides specific guidance to staff for emergency situations (this is not publicly distributed or on any social media outlet as it provides sensitive information regarding our buildings and procedures for addressing potential safety and/or security situations) • Annual training of all staff on the EOP • Regular meetings with the Glendale Heights Police Department (GHPD) and the Glenside Fire District to review the current EOP and make revisions to reflect best practices in school safety • Employment of a part-time School Resource Officer (SRO) in partnership with the GHPD • Annual training on school safety protocol from Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) • Installation of emergency call buttons in all buildings which immediately activate 911 services • Secured vestibules in all buildings, providing a two-step entry process and video cameras • Annual safety drills, including specific training by the GHPD on school shooter protocols • Installation of external and internal cameras to monitor our buildings 24/7 • Employment of a security company to monitor the security alarms throughout the district We take this responsibility very seriously and will continue to do all that we can to make our buildings safe and secure. Finally, we ask that you take the time to talk with your children about their role in making sure our schools are safe. Our students are CRITICAL partners in this process. They are more likely to hear about something or see something that suggests that a fellow student may be thinking about hurting themselves or others. They need to take action immediately if that happens. Please encourage them to speak to ANY adult in the building and report ANY activity (pictures, discussions, social media messages, rumors, etc.) that suggest that a student is struggling with ideas of violence. Their willingness to speak up will never result in discipline or cause them any problem. It may be what saves their lives and/or the lives of others. In closing, I realize that this is a very difficult subject and certainly one that I wish we did not have to engage in; however, I want to assure you that there is nothing more important to the staff and Board of Education than ensuring that your children are safe in our schools. We will remain committed to doing all we can to ensure their safety and we will continue to ask you to serve as our partners in this journey. Thank you for your continued support of our schools and making Queen Bee a great school district. As always, feel free to contact me at vtabbert@gueenbeel6.org or 630-260-6105, if you have any questions and/or concerns. Victoria L Tabbert, Ed.S. Superintendent of Schools
