The mission of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is to alleviate hunger by acquiring and distributing food to people in need, promoting solutions that advance self-sufficiency and hunger relief, and leading the region in the fight against hunger. The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is the largest hunger relief organization in the Region, and the only food bank serving Lake and Porter counties. It has been leading Northwest Indiana’s fight against hunger since 1982 and distribute more than 4.2 million meals each year to hungry kids, adults and seniors in the community. Each month, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana serves more than 23,000 individuals and families through its 100+ partner agencies, mobile distributions, and direct service hunger relief programs like the Commodity Supplemental Food Program for seniors and the BackPack program for kids.
The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization and a powerful and efficient network of 200 food banks across the country. facebook.comThere is a mobile food distribution on Monday, February 26, from 2-4pm at Iglesia Evangelical De Cristo Church in Portage (5929 Stone Avenue). This mobile pantry is available to all Northwest Indiana residents in need of food assistance, so please share with friends, family, or any of your neighbors who may need assistance. Remember to bring valid proof of Indiana residency and boxes/bags to carry items.
The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana works with a network of 100+ food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Lake and Porter County to ensure all of our neighbors have access to the nutrition they need. With the SNAP cuts proposed in the FY2019 budget submitted by President Trump, Feeding America expects over 40 billion meals to be lost over 10 years. This budget also eliminates a critical program for low income seniors, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), which provides over 145 million meals a year across the nation. These budget cuts will increase demand on the nation's charitable food system at a time when food banks are already stretched to meet sustained high need.
Due to inclement weather, the Food Bank facility will be closed Friday, February 9th. If you are in need of food assistance, visit foodbanknwi.org/gethelp. Please remember to contact your local pantry or soup kitchen before visiting, to ensure their availability.
