The Lee Richardson Zoo is often referred to as an oasis on the plains of Kansas.  Home to hundreds of Kansas native and exotic animals, the Lee Richardson Zoo features over fifty beautifully landscaped acres in Garden City, spacious animal exhibits, walking paths, a playground, picnic areas, and shady avenues.  Experience elephants, giraffes, lions, bears, birds, primates and many more species from around the world, up close.

Our unique zoo is open year round, free to pedestrians, and vehicles may drive through for just $10 per day.  Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the zoo supports conservation projects and reproduction of the world's rare and endangered species.  The zoo’s Education Division provides a variety of programs (many free of charge) on-site, off-site, and through video conferencing technology.  Summer camps, classroom presentations, and special events are just a few ways we share our love of wildlife with others.

Come celebrate World Lemur Day with Lee Richardson Zoo on Saturday, October 28th from 2 to 4PM. Head towards the lemurs and spider monkey near the flamingos, to find tons of fun waiting for you and the whole family! Come take part in a keeper chat at 3PM, fun activities, and discovery carts. Madagascar is the only place you will find lemurs in the wild. Unfortunately, they are vanishing. Fortunately, we can do something about it. We can help save their habitat through smart shopping choices. By purchasing rainforest-friendly products, we support sustainable farming that does not rely on clear cutting the rainforest where lemurs and other unique species live in order to meet production demands. Look for products from companies are certified by the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil, such as Barilla, L’Oreal, and Mars inc. You can also look for products certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

"I don't always run on water, but when I do, I'm escaping predators". Basilisk lizards are native to Central America and have the unique adaptation of running on water to escape their predators. The lizards are called the Jesus Lizard because of their ability to rapidly move across water surfaces by moving their back legs in a churning motion and using splayed feet to slap the water which creates air pockets that prevent them from sinking. They are excellent swimmers and are able to stay underwater for up to 30 minutes. Have you visited the basilisk lizard living in the Marie Osterbuhr Aviary at the zoo yet?
