First Selectman Declares January 9, 2018 as "Law Enforcement Appreciation Day" in the Town of Fairfield. Residents, especially children, are encouraged to show their thanks and appreciation to our Police Department by sending emails or notes on or leading up to January 9, 2018. Emails can be sent to the Department’s Public Information Officer Robert Kalamaras at rkalamaras@fairfieldct.org and written correspondence can be sent to Police Chief Gary MacNamara, Fairfield Police Department, 100 Reef Road, Fairfield, CT 06824. At Wednesday's Board of Selectmen meeting, the following Proclamation was read by First Selectman Tetreau and issued to the Police Chief and Dpty Police Chief. The 15-year old grandson of two Fairfield residents also presented the Police with a special thank you letter. Town of Fairfield, Connecticut Proclamation WHEREAS: The Town of Fairfield proudly celebrates January 9, 2018 as National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day (L.E.A.D.); and WHEREAS: The citizens of Fairfield wish to publicly recognize the dedication that the men and women of our Police Department have demonstrated in choosing the path of public service to us all; and WHEREAS: Law Enforcement in Fairfield was first organized in the year 1661 with the appointment of the first Town Marshal. The standing Police Department was created by Town Ordinance in 1930 with 7 officers to protect and serve the citizens of Fairfield. Today, sworn officers, special agents, telecommunicators, Animal Control Officers, administrative support, and Marina Guards protect and serve the 14th largest town in the State; and WHEREAS: Our Fairfield Police put on a badge each day, knowing that they may face extremely dangerous situations while carrying out their duties, and for this we recognize and extend sincere gratitude to the men and women in blue; and WHEREAS: On Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, and every day, Fairfield supports and recognizes all those who stand on the front lines and continue to make Fairfield safer; and WHEREAS: Residents, especially children, are encouraged to show their thanks and appreciation to our Police Department by sending emails or notes on or leading up to January 9, 2018. STATUS OF THE STATE EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER - ACTIVATED MAJOR WINTER STORM CONTINUES IMPACTING OUR AREA... At 2:20 PM radar showed moderate to heavy snow falling across most of the state. North winds are currently sustained at 25 MPH with gusts to 45 - 55 MPH at times. Eversource and UI are reporting a total of 796 customers without power across the state. Total snowfall currently ranges between 7 - 12 inches across the state. The following forecast is based on a blend of the GFS, HRRR and NAM models which are in good agreement: Rest of This Afternoon: Moderate to heavy snow at times with snowfall rates between 1" - 2" per hour until 4:00 PM. The snow intensity is expected to slowly taper down to light snow by 6:00 PM. However some bands of heavier snow could persist into this evening in a few towns. Strong winds gusting to 45 - 60 MPH at times will cause blowing and drifting of the snow and also reduce visibility to near zero at times. The strong winds may also cause some additional power outages. A major impact is expected for travel this afternoon with 2 - 4 inches of snow on most roads and moderate snow falling. This Evening and Overnight: The snow is forecast to end from west to east between 6:00 - 9:00 PM with considerable blowing and drifting of snow continuing overnight. Bitterly cold conditions are expected with lows between 0 F and 10 above and winds gusting to 30 - 40 MPH at times causing wind chills to drop to -20 F at times. Friday and Saturday: Bitterly cold and windy with highs around 10 F and overnight lows between 0 and -10 F. Wind chills are forecast to range from around -10 F during the days down to -20 to -30 F at night. The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection Division of Emergency Management and Homeland Security will continue to closely monitor this storm. The next update will be sent out this afternoon at 5:30 PM.
The Town of Fairfield is closed today, Thursday, January 4, for all non-essential services. This includes the library and the transfer station.
