The celibate brothers and sisters of the Ephrata Cloister lived a life of self-denial as they waited for the eminent return of Christ. As a sign of the impermanence of life here on earth, and a rejections of luxuries, they slept on hard plank beds and used a little block of wood as a pillow. Fortunately, Conrad Beissel specified that that block of wood be made out of “Pine, or another soft wood.” You can own your own Ephrata Cloister inspired wood pillow block, made by local woodworkers Don Barnett and Jere Retallack – each $12.00. They make great gifts.
