Dear Friends, I am excited to present Local Artists Eric Hagemann and Peter Kosterich’s Art Show “Rust and Shine” – Opening Reception Sunday, March 4th, 1-4PM, 2018 at HorseSpirit Arts Gallery. Eric Hagemann takes amazing photographs of nature, landscapes, rural and urban scenery, as well as hand makes his own wooden frames. Peter Kosterich designs and creates beautiful, original, abstract sterling silver jewelry - some of which includes embedded gems stones. Art Show Runs from 4-to-25 March, 2018. Come enjoy their artwork - along with that of the Gallery’s 45 other Local Artists - in the company of friends and fellow art lovers. Festive beverages and desserts served! About the Artists: Eric Hagemann: is an accomplished Artist “in constant pursuit of thoughtful images.” His goal is to create photographs that inspire and cause the viewer to wonder. By blending light and shadow with the element of time, Eric isolates and frames experiences and views not readily appreciated with the human eye. Eric believes that “a photograph should tell a story of a moment or a generation; leave the viewer wanting to know more; and allow them to create their own interpretation and end to the story.” Eric uses various photography techniques to recreate, tailor and emphasize the scene as he experienced it when he captured the image. While some may not prefer post processing, Eric finds it a natural extension of recreating the vision of the moment. Peter Kosterich: was the neighborhood “fix it kid.” This evolved over the years into a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Pratt Institute in New York, and his handyman business of 31 years, Perau Associates in Columbia, Maryland. Peter’s knowledge of engineering skills coupled with a side education in design, and love of experimenting and modifying, led him to working with precious metals and making jewelry. Under the guidance of precious gem and precious metal artist Kevin White, Peter began his journey into a second profession, Jewelry Designer. Peter’s work is generally abstract in nature as he continues to push the limits of his tools and materials. All are original designs and completely handmade. Most are %92.5 sterling silver and some include embedded cubic zirconia, or diamonds. And some are copper and brass with various patinas. Peter creates his own texture plates for design embossing patterns. In closing: I look forward to seeing you soon! Dear Friends, Please join me in welcoming Local Artist Alison Leigh Menke to HorseSpirit Arts Gallery. Alison is a Fine Art, Plein Air Oil Painter. She is exceedingly gifted and I am absolutely thrilled to have her join the gallery! Come meet Alison in person on Sunday, 11 February, 1-3PM – along with the other 45 local Artists of HorseSpirit Arts Gallery! Festive beverages & desserts served! About Alison Leigh Menke: Alison is a conceptual plein air impressionist. Her subjects depict the natural beauty of light in the landscape, while emphasizing the rich colors our world has to offer. The vast majority of her work is created in open air, often backpacking to remote locations, or navigating city sidewalks. Alison loves painting directly from real life and experience. Her approach stresses the importance of expressing a true sense of light and place while showcasing the qualities of oil paint and brushwork. Painting thick and thinking abstract design, she loves to use texture and color to move a viewer around her painting. Alison Leigh Menke was born abroad in 1987 and raised in Howard County, Maryland. Growing up she was impressed by the art of her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. These strong women and their paintings enchanted her throughout her youth and help inspire her today. Her great-grandmother, Georgia Leigh Caldwell, was an American Impressionist. In 2010 Alison graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, with a degree in Art and Art History. She has studied art abroad in Thessaloniki, Greece and in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and has attended over a dozen workshops with talented artists around the world. Her journey into landscape painting began in 2011 when a three-week solitary trip to Colorado turned into a five-month foray into plein air. She painted every day, camped in national parks, sold studies out of the trunk of her car, and created over 150 paintings. With a desire to travel and learn from her peers, Alison has spent the past three years attending plein air competitions and festivals. Between the plein air seasons of 2016 and 2017 she attended 26 competitions along the eastern seaboard and was honored with 26 awards. Her successes have garnered attention from local newspapers, Plein Air Magazine, Art Connoisseur, and various publications. Travelling is a large part of Alison’s artistic inspiration. She loves the freshness of new locations and loves to explore how much her palette changes from landscape to landscape. By no means is Alison a nomad. As far as her travels may take her – there is no place like home in Clarksville, Maryland. Organizations: Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association (MAPAPA) – Paint-out Coordinator Board Member (2014 – present); American Impressionist Society (AIS) – Associate Member (2017 – present); Maryland Federation of Art (MFA) – Artist Member (2015 – present); Washington Project of the Arts (2011 – 2015); and Junior Member of the Arts Club of Washington (2014- 2015) Teaching: Chesapeake School of Fine Art – Oil painting and landscape instructor; Private studio classes (2016 – present). In Closing: Please come see Alison’s beautiful artwork, along with the original creations of the gallery’s other 45 local artists! And I look forward to seeing you on Sunday 11 February, 1-3PM, for a “Meet the Artist” event at the Gallery. Festive beverages and desserts served! CONGRATULTIONS to the Winner of Covington Emerging Artist Award, 2018: Artist Howard Garrett for his oil painting “Along the Seine”. It is an absolutely beautiful realistic oil painting with excellent use of color and light. The piece glows with the warm sunlight of the French countryside. The light, the landscape, the water and reflections, and the structure are all so well rendered that it transports you to the peaceful place. Mr. Garrett received a $500 Check from HorseSpirit Arts Gallery & an Award Certificate. Honorable Mentions: Each received a $50 Gift Certificate to HorseSpirit Arts Gallery • Artist Varada Vaidya for her Sculpture “Warli Form and Music”, Acrylic on Tree Branches. These are beautifully made, intriguing objects that connect us to our shared human history of telling stories with pictures. • Artist Kate Tufts for her Water Color Painting “Cove Shells”. It is an interesting use of texture, shape & color that captures the viewer. The composition is very strong, with an effective use of a limited palette. The artist displays a mastery of the watercolor pouring technique which requires careful planning and execution. The Covington Emerging Artist Award is given by HorseSpirit Arts Gallery (in alliance with the Howard County Arts Council and the HoCo Open 2018) in honor of Ms. Mable Covington Holliday, a talented artist and art teacher and a strong believer that all people have innate creative abilities. She ran her art studio for over 20 years and along the way, she lovingly taught her granddaughter – Robin Holliday - to create and appreciate art. The award recognizes the artist whose work demonstrates not only technical excellence, but also most clearly echoes Mable Covington Holliday’s belief in the power of the creative spirit. Eligibility: Artists were eligible for this award who have been exhibiting and/or selling their art for less than three years. Artists working in any art media were considered. No one affiliated with HorseSpirit Arts Gallery was eligible. 2018 Selection Committee: Robin Holliday, Deborah Maklowski and Brenda Kidera. In closing, I offer a huge thank you to the Howard County Arts Council for all they do to support our Arts Community!! Dear Friends, When I created HorseSpirit Arts Gallery over four years ago, I wanted it to be a place of refuge - a sanctuary from the outside world. I decided to carry only “uplifting art” in hopes of allowing people the opportunity to remember the beauty of life. I believe that by making this connection, we can find the best instantiation of ourselves. And this can encourage us to offer whatever strength and light we have to help others find their way. This is my hope for us all in 2018. You are a blessing in my life. I look forward to seeing you soon.
