Mines of Spain - State Recreation featuring Julien Dubuque Monument &EB Lyons Interpretive center. This page managed by the Friends of the Mines of Spain The Mines of Spain Recreation Area and E.B.Lyons Interpretive and Nature Center are located on 1439 acres of beautiful wooded and prairie land just south of Dubuque, IA. The area has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and includes Julien Dubuque's Monument at a point just above where Catfish Creek meets the Mississippi. One of Iowa's "Watchable Wildlife Areas," it features the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center which serves as the Visitor Center and the Park Office.Come see the Horseshoe Bluff Interpretive Trail, the 15 acre wetland, creeks, forest, prairies, cropland, meadows and the Mississippi River from a bald eagle's view. Picnic with us, go for a hike or cross country ski on one of our many trails and maybe you will capture a glimpse of a song bird, bobcat, red-shouldered hawk, flying squirrel, white-tailed deer, wild turkey or various butterflies along the Mississippi River Bluffland. Friends of the Mines of Spain Thank you for the great public turn out
A public input session to hear from you regarding your hopes and plans for the future of parks, outdoor recreation, conservation and natural resources in Dubuque County. Sponsored by State Rep. Chuck Isenhart, ranking member of the Environmental Protection Committee in the Iowa House of Representatives and a member of the General Assembly's Appropriations Subcommittee for Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment. Other Dubuque area elected officials are being invited. Conservation and recreation groups from the area will be on hand to share information with you about their activities. Licenses Expire Jan. 10 Hunters and anglers are encouraged to purchase their 2018 license before their 2017 license expires. Annual Iowa hunting and fishing licenses expire on Jan. 10. License holders who purchased the three year option should check the date range printed on their license for expiration.
