I just finished teaching the last day of The Community Interpreter® International training program and, as usual, I learned a lot from my own students - such diversity of backgrounds and experience. Among other topics, the 15-minute rule came up once more. It seems we all understand it, but very few practice it. Have you ever heard the saying “when you arrive on time, you are already late”? It is so true for us interpreters. So, as a little reminder to ourselves, we listed the 3 most important reasons to arrive at least 15 minutes before the encounter: 1. It allows you time to have a briefing if the providers are available, to get settled, to get “in the moment” and to prepare mentally for the upcoming session. 2. It allows you to verify how many people are in attendance, maybe to see the room where the session will take place and to think of your positioning. 3. It projects professionalism. You don’t want to arrive at the last minute as everyone else is entering the room. It helps you build a track record of excellence that everybody notices. And no… you should not expect to be paid for arriving 15 minutes early… but it certainly constitutes a reason to want you back!
