Potential alternative to opioids discovered in Denton lab
A #Texas flower may hold the key to ending the opioid drug epidemic -- thanks to work of #TXWomans researchers. #TWU's Camilia Maier, a botanist and biology professor, and Dayna Averitt, a neuroscientist and biology assistant professor, have found a possible pain-killing alternative to opioids. The pair say a chemical in the sap of euphorbia bicolor -- a native Texas plant more commonly known as "snow on the prairie" -- appears to do what opioids do. It stops pain by turning nerve endings off. However, it is not addictive. “We’re trying to target the signals as they make their way to the brain,” Averitt told WFAA-TV. “So if we can turn them off like a light switch for a long period of time, the brain doesn’t even know about it and you don’t have that pain.” Note: The sap is toxic and would not be ingested. Instead, it might be injected directly into pain sites. SUMMER STORIES: Graduate students in #TXWoman's occupational therapy program worked w/ neurology and occupational therapy researchers at Scottish Rite Hospital in #FriscoTX. Their goal? Implement a constraint induced movement therapy (or CIMT) camp for kids with hemiplegic cerebral palsy. Assistant professor Heather Roberts says CIMT is a form of treatment where a child’s stronger arm is put into a splint, forcing him or her to use the affected arm for daily activities. Odemaris Ramirez, a master's student from Dallas who wants to serve as an advocate for children with special needs, says her younger brother, who was born with cerebral palsy, has participated in the camp. “I remember he would talk about how hard some of the activities were, but it was his favorite part of summer," says Ramirez. "Even today, he will talk about all that he learned at the camp, and I can see him being more aware of using both his arms. This time around, I got to be part of this camp, but from an occupational therapy student perspective in which I was able to impact a child’s life.” For the camp, TWU students planned and created fun, goal-oriented games and activities that targeted specific movements to improve the function and use of the affected arm. Camp activities included games, art projects, outdoor activities, sensory play activities and bi-manual activities. Children attending the camp ranged in age from 6 to 12, and each had different levels of range of motion, and camp leaders would adapt the activities as necessary to make it an appropriate challenge for the child. Remember that back-to-school tradition where the teacher asks what everyone did for the summer? 👩🏫👨🏫 Senior Ariana Gonzalez (pictured in blue) traveled to Peru for the International Dance Festival with her Ballet Folklorico group! It was the first time for Gonzalez, who’s been dancing for about 10 years and returns home to Houston at least once a year to perform with the Houston-based Mixteco Ballet Folklorico, Houston, Texas. Gonzalez, who is majoring in kinesiology and pediatric physical therapy, says her mother, Hortencia Meshania, also danced Ballet Folklorico -- a traditional Mexican dance that showcases regional folk culture intertwined with characteristics of ballet. When Gonzalez grew up, she knew she wanted to "follow my mother's footsteps and also keep our culture and tradition alive." During the school year, Gonzalez practices regularly at @TWUFitandRec studios. About her latest travels, Gonzalez says she was "grateful to bring traditional dances from Mexico" to the community in Peru. 📷 Photography by @urlilcherry. What did you do this summer? WOMEN WHO LEAD: Katie Mont never thought that going to college "to be an artist" was ever a viable option. But after joining her high school yearbook and discovering the world of #graphicdesign, Mont found her true calling. Now, the #TXWomans alumna (BFA '15), has made a name for herself as the director of marketing with The Sun Company, a startup specializing in renewable solutions, and a #freelanceartist responsible for beautifying #Denton landscapes and local business websites. Today, you can see Mont’s murals at nearby businesses including the Denton County Brewing Company and Komodo Loco. She has also completed web design and branding projects with hundreds of clients, including: the The Bearded Monk and Sundago Bell. "I have the opportunity to create anything my heart desires, to create art prints and leggings and backpacks and to see people in real life wearing them because they resonate with them," says Mont. "That's an amazing feeling." 📷 Courtesy of Katie Mont Learn more: https://twu.edu/institute-womens-leadership/women-who-lead/katie-mont-bfa-15/ Know of a woman who should be featured?
