This is one reason why we don't image all our patients. A significant number of people with no symptoms will show degeneration of their spine. Study after study indicates that imaging is of limited value in determining what your problem is. It can actually be harmful in a number of ways, causing more studies and expense to the patient, that don't help their problem and may lead to Catastrophizing over your "degenerative spine" which is essentially normal. We treat you, the patient, not the image. Of course, if there are things in your history or we find things in your exam, that lead us to believe you have a non- mechanical problem or disease causing your spinal pain, we will get more data in the way of imaging or other studies.
