Elms College is a four-year coeducational Catholic liberal arts college.  The Sisters of St. Joseph helped to found the College of Our Lady of the Elms as a school to train young women to teach in Massachusetts schools. Their mission, however, went far beyond preparing the next generation of teachers.

The Sisters of St. Joseph worked to better the entire community, and ensured that the college would be a place where women who otherwise could not afford an education could prepare themselves for a career.

Today, Elms College continues in that tradition, integrating service to others and a foundation in the liberal arts with career preparation for both men and women.

Postbac premedical studies student Candice Kent presented “Identification of the Unknown Bacterial Entity in a Human Probiotic Supplement,” which relates the observation of an unknown bacterial colony while testing for the presence of E. faecium colonies and their efficacy as an oral probiotic supplement. Macklin Illiff, who is pursuing his master’s in biomedical sciences, presented “Analysis and Efficacy of an Equine Commercially Available Probiotic Containing Lactobacillus Plantarum,” which tested a specific horse probiotic supplement to see if it actually contained the four organisms the product claims to contain. Professor Williams presented “Comparison of Microbiomes Between Anthelmintic Treated and Untreated Foals with Intestinal Parasite Infections,” a project that includes researchers from Smith College, the University of Kentucky, Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, and the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Science.
