Do you live in one of the blue dots seen below? If so, you'll probably be seeing us this Saturday, March 11! Our crews will be out installing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on Seekins Street, Scotts Lane, and Evergreen Drive all day Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. If we finish all of those homes, you'll likely see us head down School and Summer Streets. As always, these times are tentative- 911 calls will change our plans completely! We hope to see you on Saturday! #BFDSmokeAlarms

As we've been visiting homes throughout our community, many people have asked why we are doing this smoke alarm installation program. The picture below is one reason why we are doing it. On Saturday, the family of Kayla (McNeely) Brown gathered to celebrate Kayla's life. For those of you who never met her, Kayla grew up in Bucksport, and was a member of the Class of 2006. Kayla and her husband, Roger, died in an apartment fire in Palmyra on February 7th, 2017. You may have read the news stories, or seen the reports on TV. What you may not have known is that most of Kayla's family still lives in or around Bucksport. Many of you have likely seen at least one of her relatives since her death, but may not have connected the family with the couple that died in a fire almost 50 miles away. No parent should ever have to bury a child. Please, when you get home tonight, test your smoke alarms and make sure they work. Create and practice a Home Fire Escape Plan. Know where your family will meet outside in case of a fire. Make sure your kids know what to do in the event of a fire. Do it for Kayla and Roger, and for their family. Do it so that hopefully, no family will have to go through what their family is going through. No one ever plans on having a house fire. Please, be prepared, and practice. As always, if you do not have working smoke alarms (or if you know of someone who has none) please contact us immediately. We will try to get to them within a day to install alarms for you. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. We're here to help, and we're here if you need us. If your house is on fire, this isn't how you want your closest fire hydrant to look! (Yes folks, that spot o' blue next to the stick o' orange IS a fire hydrant!) MaineWater is working hard to get them clear, but they would appreciate any help you could give them... and so would we! Please, grab a shovel and clear out the closest hydrant to your house... when you're done, snap a photo and post it here! We're here (shoveling) if you need us.

Good morning everyone! Hopefully everyone has dug out from the first storm this week, because forecasts are showing up to 18 inches for our area in the next 24 hours-and this will be much heavier than the snow on the ground. Once you've got your exits and roofs cleared off, take a minute to clear out around a fire hydrant. Last night Skowhegan Fire battled a large house fire, and Fairfield PD reported that firefighters were digging out hydrants with their hands. Every firefighter that is digging out a hydrant is a firefighter not on a house, or not searching the building for those trapped inside. Those minutes are precious, and you could buy us some time. Thanks in advance! As always, please check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. We're here if you need us! Photo courtesy WABI.

This is how bad it is, folks. Even the plows have been pulled off the roads temporarily. Stay inside.
Snowpocalypse 2017 will shortly be upon us! A few friendly reminders for all of you tonight: 1. STAY HOME! If you can avoid being on the roads, do it. Several businesses as well as RSU 25 have already closed for tomorrow. If you can stay home, please stay home. The more people that are on the road, the more likely we are to have accidents, which in turn puts us on the road, slows down snow plows, and slows down the linemen that will be out in force as well. 2. Run generators safely! Don't run them inside, and don't overload them. Make sure any extension cords are rated for the loads you will be running. If you have questions about a setup, ask! 3. Check on your neighbors. Help them out if they need it. 4. Shovel gently. Snow shoveling is a leading cause of heart attacks, so take it easy. 5. Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. If we lose power, you're all likely to be burning candles and using secondary power sources. Make sure your alarms are working to alert you early of any problems! Keep in mind, we can't drive any faster than you can in this weather, and it will take us longer to get to you in an emergency! The more advance warning you have, the better chance we have of getting there quickly. Please be safe. As always, we will be here if you need us! If there are any major happenings around town, we will try to keep you updated via this page- until the power or internet gets knocked out or we get too busy!
Bucksport Fire Department begins town-wide installation of smoke detectors
A great write up by The Ellsworth American showcasing the Smoke Alarm project we're working on right now! This past weekend our crews visited 44 homes and were able to cross 31 of those homes off our list. Be sure to watch our page to follow the progress of this program. #BFDSmokeAlarms

We had a great first day of smoke alarm installs! Two teams of firefighters visited 33 homes today, and completed work on 11 homes. So... we're 11 homes closer to completion! Teams will be back out tomorrow (Sunday) morning starting after 9:00 am. Everyone has enjoyed the program and allowed us to install these free life saving devices thus far. We thank those homeowners we visited today, and look forward to meeting new folks tomorrow! #BFDSmokeAlarms

Busy bees at the station today! Some BFD & BPD members, and volunteers from Bucksport Heart & Soul, worked their way through hundreds of folders and printed materials packing them to be ready for the start of the #BFDSmokeAlarms program this weekend!

Here we go! We have things in order, and it's time to begin visiting homes and installing smoke detectors! It all starts THIS WEEKEND! You've probably heard, BFD was a lucky recipient of a FEMA grant allowing us to create a smoke detector installation program for every one and two-family residence in Bucksport and Verona Island. As part of our visit to each home in those towns we'll provide a detector, perform a home fire safety inspection, and also provide educational materials discussing our program and the importance of having functioning detectors in your home. Beginning this month, the program will stretch through until August 2017 - as you can imagine, it'll take some time to visit every home. This weekend - we will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 28 visiting the homes in the "Town Site", specifically on Spring St, Silver St, Thomas St, Spofford St, and Bagley Ave. We will work these streets on both Saturday AND Sunday (1/29). Firefighters and BFD personnel will be walking about the neighborhood in hi-vis reflective - and clearly identifiable - clothing and will be in teams of 2 or more. You'll also notice some of our trucks in the area, those contain gear, tools, and a surplus of detectors.
