Poverty is the problem, not people: How might Brattleboro address panhandling?
The "Voices" section of The Commons is always an interesting read: full of insight, community introspection, and opinions. This week, there were several letters addressing poverty, panhandling, and the community response. This public service announcement was among them and "aimed to educate our community about the issue, the law, and current services" related to panhandling. The "intention is not to admonish or guide, but to provide information and serve to continue our town's dialogue toward sustainable, realistic, and compassionate solutions. It was written by Josh Davis, executive director of Groundworks Collaborative, Mike Fitzgerald, Chief of Brattleboro Police Department, and Michelle Simpson-Siegel, President of the Board for the Downtown BrattleboroAlliance. They encourage readers to respond with their comments on these complicated and complex topics to the Voices. http://www.commonsnews.org/site/site05/story.php?articleno=17133&page=1#.WRXHkVQrKM9
