Seven Oaks Rec - Boone IA

Come to Boone next weekend, May 20-21, and take part in the Gladiator Assault Challenge at our neighbor Seven Oaks Recreation. Electric Weekend at the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad

On Saturday, June 3rd, and Sunday, June 4th the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad & Museum will be celebrating its electric heritage with its first ever “Electric Weekend”. Various pieces of electric equipment will be featured, including the jewel of the fleet, Charles City Western Car 50, which was built in 1915. Other equipment will include: Chicago, South Shore & South Bend Car 106, a set of former Illinois Central electric bi-level cars, and the railroad's most recent acquisition, Iowa Terminal #53. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-11, and include admission to the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum (where a movie covering the history of Car 50 will be playing), $2 off of a basic coach class ticket aboard our excursion train, and rides aboard Charles City Western Car 50 and Chicago, South Shore & South Bend Car 106. The event runs from 9 AM until 5 PM on Saturday, and from 10 AM until 4 PM on Sunday. Trolleys will be making trips downtown every 30 minutes (alternating between Car 50 and Car 106).

Streamliners Through Iowa is an upcoming exhibit at the James H. Andrew Railroad Museum and History Center opening Wednesday, May 10th. This exhibit, partially sponsored by Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities, highlights contributions streamlined trains made to Iowa travel before and following WWII and their important impact on Iowa citizens. The exhibit displays informational banners, with topics including: A New Way to Travel, What is Streamlining?, The First Streamliner, Streamliners, Steam vs. Diesel, The Streamliner Experience, Streamliners: Their Economic Impact, Streamliners in Iowa: Post WWII, Decline of the Streamliners, The Chicago and North Western Streamliners, Workers on the Train, and Pullman Porters. In addition to the banners are rare photography, and informational hand outs. The museum theater will feature the movie American Streamliners. Also on display will be a combination of artifacts and interactive displays, as well as a hi-res informational program highlighting little-known facts about these special streamlined trains and how they affected Iowans.
