2000 Calendar

This is the November page from the Boggs Society's second fund-raising calendar in 2000. See other months' pages in our 1999 and 2000 Calendar photo albums on our Facebook.com/Boggstown. This photo is of the broken headstone for Joseph F. Boggs who was born 11/28/1799 in Kentucky, and died 1/21/1844 in Boggstown. He was the son of William Boggs, and he married Evalina Boggess (10/25/1797-6/10/1943), and they had no children. William and/or Joseph founded the Boggs Tobacco Company just north of Boggstown, just east of where Joseph and Evalina are buried in the Old Boggstown Cemetery, and just south of the New Boggstown Cemetery. The Boggs brand made in the factory used tobacco grown nearby, had a great reputation, and was peddled out of wagons in central Indiana, eastern Illinois, and western Ohio. William bought ground in 1831 from his father-in-law Edward Brison who lived in Kentucky, and later he/and or Joseph donated land to build a church and school, so the new town was named for the family, several years before it was officially platted in 1867. We chose to name our group for Joseph when we started in 1997. After restoring the Johnston Cemetery in 2016, we may next repair the gravestones of Joseph and Evalina, before starting on another cemetery. The Boggs Society's 2017 local history calendar is still available to buy, and this year its theme is BARNS, with 11 photos of current and long gone barns. It costs $10 and you can also add our 2000-16 calendars to your collection for $5 each. Add $2 per calendar if we mail it to you. Contact President Ken Gardner at 317-835-7215 or kengardner99@gmail.com to buy, or mail a check to Joseph Boggs Society at 2616 N Sand Creek Road Boggstown, IN 46110.

Quarterly Meetings

The Boggs Society's 10-19-2016 Quarterly Meeting was held on one of the really last warm days of autumn, with 24 people attending. 101-year-old (almost 102!) Vivian Fraker (photo) told about living near and in Boggstown all of her life. Boggstown Presbyterian Church Pastor Matthew Downey (photo) sat with her to help tell her story and answer our questions. As a child, her family ran Harding's Camp along Big Sugar Creek where they charged 15 cents per person to camp. She married Ernie Craig who was in the Navy and later a barber and they had a daughter Jenny. After Ernie passed away, Vivian married Archie Fraker who owned a popular gas station in town. We have 1 of 8 5-6 minute videos of Vivian's talk in the Video section of our page Facebook.com/Boggstown, and the others will be added after a problem Facebook says they are having has been fixed (it's still a problem as of 11-3-16). The business meeting included elections for next year. "Acting" President Ken Gardner is now President to finish Terry Morgan's term through 2017. Jill Sanders will be Secretary for another 2 years. No one ran for Treasurer, so Ken Gardner will continue as "acting" Treasurer until someone volunteers. Terry Morgan moved from President to fill an open Director seat, and will now serve a full 3 year term. Thanks to these volunteers and our other current officers. After the program we enjoyed Autumn time snacks brought by attendees. Thanks to everyone for another successful night in Boggstown!!!

2016 COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT Survey

The Boggs Society was asked by Shelby County's Major Hospital to distribute their 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment, so please read below and complete the survey: Greetings! You serve because you care. The well-being of Shelby County matters to you. So you invest your time, expertise, and resources to make Shelby County a better place to call home. Health is an essential component of a thriving community. On behalf of Major Hospital, I invite you to share your perspective about the health of Shelby County by taking the Major Hospital Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). Every 3 years nonprofit hospitals are required by the federal government to complete a CHNA. The purpose of the public health needs survey is to learn how the community experiences health and wellness and what they identify as the most significant health challenges in Shelby County. We want everyone's voice to be heard. Your perspective and experience are important. Along with MHP, there are many government and non-government organizations that invest in the health and wellness of our Shelby County communities. The results of the CHNA provide leaders, decision-makers, and residents with important information for improving the well-being of employees, patients, students, neighborhoods, churches, and our many public and private organizations throughout Shelby County. Please take a few moments to complete the community health needs survey. If you work-in but do not live-in Shelby County, your perspective is also important. The link to the survey follows. Using this URL, you may also complete the survey on your smart phone. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3SCKFPN We are also requesting your help in distributing this survey. The survey is for persons 18 and older. It will also be available in Spanish. If you would like paper copies, let me know and I will get some to you! Please share the survey with your family, friends, colleagues, churches, and neighbors. To be meaningful, we want a broad range of respondents throughout the county. On behalf of MHP, thank you in advance for completing the survey and helping distribute it. Everyone's perspective and experiences need to be heard!

Shelby County

The Boggs Society had this booth at the 7th annual Pioneer Fair on 9/17-18/2016 at the Shelby County Fairgrounds. We sold our 2017 history calendar along with older ones created since 1999. Here visitors are looking at our local history photos, calendars, and items. The biggest draws were the big Red Mill photo and learning that Ma Kettle grew up near Boggstown.
