Civics 101: What Does It Mean to Be a Good Citizen?
NPR’s Michel Martin, weekend host of NPR's All Things Considered, will be at the University of Scranton’s Royal Theater, Tuesday, June 6th to host a thought-provoking discussion about of what it means to be a good citizen in 2017. Is it voting? Paying taxes? Serving in the military? Protesting injustice or resisting over-reaching authority? Is it volunteering in your neighborhood school of some form of national service or running for office? BTE will be attending this event with Founding Ensemble Member Laurie McCants and Ensemble Member Emeritus Gerard Stropnicky presenting excerpts from BTE's original production of "Letters to the Editor." Civics 101: What Does It Mean to Be a Good Citizen?
On June 6, 7:00-8:30pm, at the Royal Theatre, University of Scranton, WVIA-FM is partnering with National Public Radio (NPR) for an event titled “Citizenship 101: What Does it Mean to Be a Good Citizen?” Hosted by Michel Martin as part of her NPR series, Going There, the program will present a provocative discussion around the question of what it means to be a good citizen in 2017. Is it voting? Paying taxes? Serving in the military? Protesting injustice or resisting over-reaching authority? Is it volunteering in your neighborhood school, or some form of national service or running for office? At the suggestion of WVIA-FM host Erika Funke, BTE member Laurie McCants and member emeritus Jerry Stropnicky will read a selection from BTE’s acclaimed play, Letters to the Editor. Those of you who saw the play (or read the book that resulted from the extensive research Jerry and other ensemble members did, digging into our regional history through letters written to local newspapers over about 200 years) will recall that citizenship was at the core of our exploration of the relationship between the press and the public. Tickets are $10, and can be ordered here: https://www.nprpresents.org/event/civics-101-what-does-it-mean-to-be-a-good-citizen/ Join the conversation on Twitter with #NPRGoodNeighbor and at @NPRMichel.
