The Detroit Zoo has a new resident! A young female bald eagle named Harsen has a new home there after sustaining an injury in a strong windstorm that prevents her release back into the wild. DZS has a long history of providing sanctuary to injured wild birds like Harsen.

Michigan's Senate voted yesterday to prohibit breed-specific regulations on dogs. That includes pit bulls, the breed that has garnered the most media focus and hostility. Michigan hopes to join more than 20 states that have prohibited breed-specific policies. The big debate has centered around whether to focus on entire breeds (pit bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds), or to focus on the temperament of the individual dog. You hear stories of pit bulls being responsible for a higher percentage of dog bites, as well as stories of gentle, loving pit bulls who were unfairly punished simply for being part of that breed.
