We all agree we need business and industry in Long Island ... that is what keeps us strong and vibrant. But we also must understand that when businesses fade, pollution is left behind. There are over 254 known superfund sites in Long Island. These are known risks to water quality and our families. Congress has not funded Superfund and RCRA clean ups. That money has dwindled, and the number of Superfund cleanups have plummeted. Environmental activists and lawyers like myself fear the EPA’s capabilities to monitor and manage Superfund sites are diminishing with this Administration and current Congress. And with hurricanes looming on the horizon, these 254 sites are ticking time bombs. Look at the unfolding disaster in Texas with toxic sites disrupted by rising flood waters, thereby expanding their poisonous reach. Harvey isn’t the first hurricane to threaten people with contamination and test the EPA’s mettle. “I see a severe problem with the lack of funding for EPA, because it renders them unable to respond to a disaster like this,” said Lisa Evans, a senior counsel at the environmental-law organization Earthjustice. “One has to budget for these inevitable contingencies, otherwise you can leave those communities high and dry.” We cannot wait for our fellow Long Islander to be poisoned by spreading toxic plumes and heaven forbid if another hurricane comes we must be ready for the clean-up. Support and fully fund RCRA and Superfund cleanups and get these dead properties back on the tax rolls. Turn these former sites of industry into productive land. We need a Congress that cares.
"Suffolk County is leading the way to replace outdated septic systems and cesspools, and during SepticSmart Week we are all reminded that we all can play a role in helping to reclaim our water,” said County Executive Bellone. “With installations already taking place, the Septic Improvement Program is proving to be a popular, practical and cost effective option to our residents." This is an important step to improve water quality.

He also said LI is home to about a third of anti-Semitic incidents that the ADL tracked in New York this year. Suffolk County police said about half of the 30 hate crimes reported so far this year involved anti-Semitism.
