The Market in Avondale
Description
The Market in Avondale is a neighborhood meat market. We carry fresh prepared foods, breakfast and lunch, plus Dinner to Go. Nicol Turner loves to take care of people. That’s why she went to nursing school and earned her BSN. But the restaurant business was already in her blood, so Nicol never did go into nursing.
That’s a good thing for our stomachs. The Market in Avondale is her baby and it’s come to fruition thanks to the support of her partners Chris Beagle and Dena Stockton. Nicol’s husband, Jeremy, is one of the owners of Oak Grove Market, and Nicol worked there for four years, so those familiar with it will recognize some similarities in approach.
The Market in Avondale is the community’s neighborhood market, focused on providing great prepared foods and fine, fresh meats as well as serving breakfast and lunch Tuesday – Saturday and lunch on Sunday. Nicol does nearly all the cooking herself.
Why Avondale?
“Because people here asked for it,” says Nicol. “We love being part of this community and love carrying local products.” Among the many packaged goods available are Fox Bros. sauces and Hot Squeeze products. More local fare is on the way.
Chris helped bring Nicol’s vision to life. Chris is a longtime supporter of Contribute2America, the nonprofit organization run by the Turners that provides for the hungry and homeless in Georgia (www.contribute2america.org). Chris immediately stepped up to support the market, and both women play an important role.
Taking care of people is at the heart of the Market in Avondale. They provided Thanksgiving dinner for law enforcement and for local homeless folks before they officially opened in late November.
“The more you give, the more you get,” says Nicol. “That’s what we believe, that’s how we raise our kids, and that’s how we run our business.”
