#TBT Last week, the Young Neighbors crew visited Sacred Chapel Parish in downtown Detroit. Not only did they cook an incredible meal (fried chicken, sweet potatoes, collard greens, mac & cheese and peach cobbler) for the whole group, but they helped lead us all in some great praise and worship. Fun Fact is this choir sang for Barack and Michelle Obama when at the time President Obama came to visit Detroit. (Note: Only the first half second is tilted sideways). Check out the video at 2:58 to see who starts the dance party...

Friday was our last day at Core City Neighborhoods. A few of the boys spent most of the days filling food boxes for the homeless. A few others mowed the lawn of one of the properties owned by Core City. Rest of the crew helped prepare the side dishes for the meal going to the homeless and odds and ends jobs around the facility. The best part of the day was when Ms. Lily prayer with the group. Ms. Lily has been an incredible role model and inspiration to the entire group throughout the whole week. Her strong faith and commitment to the neighborhood are unwavering! Ms. Lily prayer with every one individually who was chatting with her and without sharing anything, she accurately prayer over our worries and fears. An inspiring angel for all of us! Please pray for safe travels as the crew returns to Avon Lake around 3pm Saturday. It's been an amazing week and there's still more to share. But for now, a great last evening with our new friends and a nap as soon as we return home sounds wonderful!!! - Brendan Corrigan

Fr.Ron made it safely to Detroit and join the group for the day! We were back at Core City today. Another meal was cooked for the homeless. A group made corn, sausage with veggies, fruit salad, regular salad, lasagna and stir fry. Other members of the group continued to clean up the grounds and finish the banister. This evening is a cultural night. We will be going to a traditional Catholic Church within Detroit Called Sacred Heart to learn more about the African American culture in the city and enjoy a wonderful meal together!

I couldn't spend the entire week with the ynia teens this year, but I was able to drive to Detroit and spend the day with them. We are having a good experience so far. I spent a lot of time cooking food for those who will dine at the ISO center tonight.

Sun just keeps on shining in Detroit! This morning the group had to skip morning prayer to have the opportunity to serve breakfast at Neighborhood Services Outreach (NSO). This facility for the homeless provides shelter, meal, showers and a resting space. People are allowed to stay overnight but there are no beds, just plastic chairs. The young neighbors got a great glimpse of homelessness in Detroit and what it feels like. Following the breakfast, our coordinator from our main worksite gave us a fantastic tour of Downtown Detroit and shared more about the issue of homelessness, especially for youth. Following our tour, we went to our work site at Core City. The youth continued working on the guardrail, more cleaning, continued cleaning up the grounds, spruced up a computer lab, unloaded and sorted food that was to be distributed later in the day and cooked a large bowl of chili for NSO. On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, Core City provides the dinner meal at NSO. The St.Joseph crew will help make the meal again on Thursday and Friday. Thanks for your continued prayers. We are very excited for a special visit from Fr. Ron tomorrow!!!

Another beautiful day in Detroit. The Young Neighbors crew enjoyed another busy day at Core City. The youth helped build a guard railing, sorted clothes and helped "shoppers" in the clothing room, organized and distributed boxes of food, more outside landscaping, broke down LOTS of cardboard boxes and lent a hand anywhere they could. As a special treat, the youth went to La Gloria which is "the best Mexican bakery in town." This bakery was suggested by one of the local YNIA leaders and it didn't disappoint! Last evening for programming the youth were part of a "rally" with the other young neighbors about solidarity and the 7 themes of social teaching. Tonight, the youth will be part of a social justice themed simulation. Please continue to pray for our amazing youth!! Brendan Corrigan
