The Auburn Police Department sent our explorer team to the CHP’s State Capital Explorer Competition this past weekend. 330 explorers, from approximately 25 explorer posts participated in 15-law enforcement related skill events over a two-day period. We are very proud of our explorers who participated, Jarod Collins, Marloe Mullins, Hana Moine, and Steven Ea. Even though they only had four members, they were competing against teams that had 10-20 people. Our post took second place in the competition shooting skills, and they took second in the crime scene investigation scenario. Great job!

This morning at City Hall we had the honor of supporting the National Veterans Awareness Riders as they head off on their cross country trip to Washington DC! This is the primary event for NVAO each year- a 10 day motorcycle journey across the United States. Each day of travel involves stops at veteran hospitals and veteran homes to visit, spend time, and thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice. A typical day will also include a stop at a memorial or cemetery for a time of remembrance or a visit to a school to teach the next generation of the price of freedom. Of course, any opportunity anywhere along the route is also taken to “Thank a Vet.” Safe travels! #NVAO

To promote keeping our City clean and green, the City of Auburn sponsored the annual Healthy Auburn Waters Event for Skyridge 2nd grade students. The event teaches children about stormwater, recycling, and the wastewater treatment process & collection system. The students rotate through three stations to learn how to keep our ravines and creeks clean. At the end of the walk the children received a goody bag, information from the presentation and a healthy snack/drink. They were so excited to learn how to stay clean and green!

Today is an important day in Auburn's history! 169 years ago today, Claude Chana discovered gold! Claude Chana, a Frenchman, was a barrel maker working for Capt. Sutter. He heard about the gold discovery made by his co-worker and friend James Marshall while he was visiting a fellow Frenchman who lived on the Bear River. Chana teamed up with two friends and headed off for Coloma, to see just what Marshall had found. They gathered up 25 local Indians and 35 horses to go with them. One of the men, Francois Gendron, an old trapper, was leading the party. He knew a shorter route to Coloma than was normally taken. On their second night out, they camped on Auburn Ravine between what would become Ophir and what would become Auburn. Chana headed up the Ravine towards Auburn with his batea, a wooden pan, and tried gold panning. He was astonished to find “three considerable sized piece of yellow metal.” He and his partners mined on the Ravine for two weeks before moving on to work Baltimore Ravine where they found several large nuggets. They worked there for another week before heading up to mine on the Yuba River. On the Yuba, he amassed $25,000 - in 1848 dollars - worth of gold. Other miners soon came to the area and called it Dry Diggings. Soon they were making $800 to $1,500 dollars, again in 1848 money, per man per day. And the Gold Rush began!
