DID YOU KNOW: This fixture held fuses, red flares and torpedoes; a small explosive that could be strapped to the rail. Fuses and torpedoes were used in emergencies to warn approaching trains to stop. Placed a quarter of a mile behind a stopped train, the fusses provided a visual stop signal (red light) while the torpedoes provided an audible one (loud band). The Chamber has acquired the Atchison Railroad Museum and is in the process of restoring the cars. We are planning to make the Railroad Museum a showplace that will attract visitors and give us the opportunity to share our important railroad history. We have an insulated boxcar, now located on the track immediately behind the Santa Fe Depot, which we are planning to restore and update to be a display car. This car would then be climate controlled and secure to house valuable items that would be available for our visitors to view and enjoy. The proceeds from this year’s golf tournament will be used to supplement the restoration, along with some grant funds. We’re excited to continue our railroad car restoration, and make the Atchison Railroad Museum a destination for visitors! If you would like to participate in the June 3rd Golf Tournament, please email projects@atchisonkansas.net
