Alton Central School 6th Grade student, Lillian Leroux-Parsons, interviewed K9 Officer Chris Johnson today for her Language Arts and STEM research project. Lillian and Officer Johnson talked about the training and dedication it takes to be a K9 Officer and the kind of work that K9 Syren has to do in order to be a successful police dog! Thank you Lillian and ACS for inviting the Alton Police Department to be a part of your educational experience! What makes this interview even more special is just hours prior, Officer Johnson and K-9 Syren tracked and apprehended a fleeing burglary suspect in Gilmanton!! The case details will be released by the Gilmanton Police Department, but Syren picked up a scent from an active scene in Gilmanton and tracked the suspect through the woods to a nearby residence. Syren lead officers right up onto the front porch where the suspect was hiding beneath the homeowner's belongings. Just another great example why Syren is a valued member of our department!

This week the Alton Police and Fire Departments worked together for a small event at the Alton Central School. Students in kindergarten through third grade participated in the Fire Department's "Risk Watch" program this spring. They learned about topics like injury prevention, bike safety, motor vehicle, and personal safety. As a way to celebrate their new skills and further their knowledge they explored the fire trucks, an ambulance, tried on some gear, and took photos with members of both departments!
Press Release At approximately 1:30 pm on May 16, 2017, the Alton Police Department responded to a lockdown at the Prospect Mountain High School. The lockdown was in response to an unconfirmed threat of violence against the school and an ex-girlfriend who is a student. The school acted quickly to secure the building, keeping students and staff safe. Our officers responded to the school and established perimeter security to ensure the alleged suspect did not make in onto school grounds. Officers from Barnstead Police and State Police also quickly responded to aid in security precautions. Follow-up investigation revealed that the suspect was located at his residence in Alton. Officers responded to the residence and detained the suspect to further investigate the incident. At this time the threat has not been confirmed and there is no evidence to support criminal charges. However, measures are being taken to trespass the subject from school grounds and an emergency protective order has been granted by the judge for the female student. As a condition of that protective order all weapons are being seized from the suspect’s household and held by the Alton Police Department. The community should know that quick precautionary measures were taken by the school administration and police department to ensure our children and school staff were never in harm’s way. This situation was dealt with in a swift and aggressive manner, to ensure any perceived threat of violence to our schools is quickly neutralized. I commend the school administration for their decisive action and the other area police agencies that rendered assistance to secure the school grounds. Chief Ryan Heath Alton Police Department
