“I grew up 10 blocks from Northern, attended school here and married my college sweetheart, Becky. As a kid, I used to play baseball on the municipal ball field, which is now where the Barnett Center stands. After graduating from NSU, I managed a local restaurant, until an opportunity at Northern opened. Wayne Fischer hired me and for the past 23 years, I’ve worked in the facilities department at Northern. I can honestly say, we’ve (facilities) never been this busy. We have more than 4,500 work orders each year and in addition to all the new buildings, we are replacing drainage areas, roofs and windows – anything to improve campus and make it more enjoyable for our students, staff and faculty. While I’m not at work, my passion is autographs. It started in 1974 and I have well over 1,000 autographs, including legendary coaches John Wooden, Pat Summitt, Nick Saban and Don Meyer. I’ll email and write letters to any sports icons, especially if they’re Minnesota Vikings and Twins, from Notre Dame or, of course, Northern State University. NSU has been great to my family and me. We have lifelong friends, many of who are former students. This is a great place to be; it’s an exciting time.” – Monte Mehlhoff, Facilities Management Director #beNORTHERN

“Some of my best memories from college are times spent in the residence halls talking with friends about anything and everything. And I do mean everything. We might have started off talking about our classes and then the conversation would change to sports, politics, relationships, religion, movies, family, plans for the weekend, or who knows what. And yes, sometimes we didn't agree and the conversations got loud and opinionated and someone may have walked off disagreeing with everyone else. But the best part was that within a couple of nights we were all back together talking and arguing over new topics and switching sides. That was when I learned the power that community and communicating have on developing the whole person. And I like it, so I just never left a college campus. And now I love being part of a university that is building new spaces on our campus to foster those same opportunities for growth for today’s students.” – Marty Sabolo, Director of Residence Life #beNORTHERN

“Besides great education, NSU provided me with support and guidance throughout my entire academic and athletic career by giving me opportunities and exposing me to various situations that helped to prepare me for life after college. The professors and coaches provided individual attention and truly helped me learn and succeed. I've had many great moments at NSU, from living in Jerde Hall during freshman year to spending the summers working at the computer center and later on my internship with the Food Export Association of the Midwest and the SD Department of Agriculture, but I would have to say football played a huge part in it, especially my first game-winning field goal at Swisher Field against University of Mary.” – Felipe Alfaia, NSU alum and marketing director for Embraer Executive Jets #beNORTHERN
