CLEAN AIR Case Study: Nursery in Private House – Bac Plus Applied SUMMARY: Our customer has just recently refurbished their new baby’s nursery and with the materials and paints used they were concerned with the Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC'S) these products produce. VOC's from some paints, varnishes and other building materials could take up to 12 months to be undetectable, but newly fitted carpets could take over 5 years to stop emitting VOC's, also some glues and adhesives in nursery furniture will emit formaldehyde continuously. Over 30% of people who are staying in new or refurbished buildings suffer from "Sick Building Syndrome" with around 29,000 people in the UK dying each year due to poor air quality. For those effected air pollution reduces life expectancy by an average of over 11 years, this is nearly 5% of all annual UK deaths. This was a concern to our customer who wanted to ensure they could give their baby the best possible start in life with a room treated with our “Bac Plus” Clean Air System. Our application was quick, easy and with little disruption to our customer not needing to move the furniture out of the way. Now applied, this application will be beneficial to the baby’s health because they will breathe less VOCs emitted from products, and our application will also help kill the spread of airborne bacteria making the internal air clean and fresh to breath. According to Asthma UK, children and young adults are more at risk from the effects of pollution because they have faster breathing rates because their lungs are still developing. Children living in areas with high pollution are more likely to have reduced lung functions as adults and long-term exposure to high concentrations of air pollution may cause asthma in children. Children aged between 8-10 years old, who lived in highly polluted parts of cities, had up to 10% less lung capacity than normal. Dr Ian Mudway, a leading expert on the air pollution impacts on child health, suggests this reduced lung function may never be reversed. In London children at over 450 schools breathe illegal and dangerous levels of air pollution's as report for the mayor of London reveals. These schools are exposed to illegal levels of the toxic gas, nitrogen dioxide caused by the increasing vehicle problems in the city. Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has pledged to enlarge and bring forward the introduction of an "Ultra low emissions zone" and other various measures to try and reduce the poor air quality of London's streets, but it would seem the internal air quality has been forgotten.
