HOW BIG IS MY SCIATIC NERVE? Lots of my clients are really surprised when I tell them how big the sciatic nerve is - they often imagine an invisible electrical network throughout the body rather than the big flat band which it actually is. At its widest point, the sciatic nerve can be around 2 - 2.5cm wide (around the same size as a hose pipe)! A few weeks ago, I posted this pic of one of my clients who had seen another clinician on the recommendation of her GP for k-taping. This is the only treatment she received despite presenting with raging nerve root pain and neurological deficit in the lower limb (scroll back through the feed for more details on this). Needless to say, I was really disappointed in both the GP and another fellow #physio when it appeared so obvious that she required urgent MRI scan and not just 'fixing' with some sticky tape! 😩 MRI results came back this week - extruded L5/S1 disc with S1 nerve root compression. She has already been listed for surgery. Of course she is a little anxious to be having surgery, but at the same time relieved that she is on the right care pathway.
