Very sad to learn that Professor Sir Harry Kroto, Nobel prize winning chemist and patron of Catalyst has passed away. When he visited Catalyst in 2014 he was inspirational when he taught a group of 100 primary school pupils about 'buckyballs'! RIP Sir Harry.

We'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to some lovely volunteers from Ricoh UK Ltd who donated their time to help Catalyst with a number of projects recently. Some volunteers donned overalls and painted, some helped to catalogue archive material that had been donated by Tata Chemicals while others did some DIY to make the spotlights in the galleries more energy efficient. We are extremely grateful to all the volunteers - their help has been invaluable! Thank you!!

Education shows and workshops at Catalyst Science Discovery Centre, Widnes are about to be enhanced thanks to a donation of £1000 from the Royal Society of Chemistry Speciality Chemicals Sector. Presenting the cheque on behalf of the sector Dr Bruce Lane said “We are thrilled to be able to help Catalyst to actively promote chemistry to young people. By working together we can offer great enthusiasm and inspiration to the scientists of the future.” This generous donation will enable Catalyst to purchase new equipment to enhance one of the interactive science shows and also develop a new hands-on workshop, related to ‘gases’ aimed at KS2 and KS3 pupils. On receiving the cheque, Catalyst Education Manager Dr Clare Hampson said “There are many gas demonstrations which are quite exciting, surprising and have the potential to really enthuse people watching them and we are really grateful to the RSC Speciality Chemicals Sector for giving us this opportunity to add to our Education Programme.”
