Visitors coming to the museum in recent weeks can't have failed to notice the town's newest mascots. For over 100 years Barney the goose has been a fixture on Whitehaven's harbour, and the current Barney has recently been joined by 2 new friends who can mostly be seen on the museum's grass verge on West Strand (reputedly called Billy and Rose, although we have also heard Barney 2 and Barney 3 mentioned!) We love having the goose gang here, but we wanted to leave a few pointers for visitors who might see them and want to interact. 1) The grass verge is now a no walk zone, primarily because geese do not like humans walking directly up to them, but also because there's now a lot of goose poo on the grass, and we don't want that dragged into the museum. 2) Whilst the geese are lovely, they can be aggressive, especially if they are threatened, hungry or just overwhelmed by lots of people. Please approach with care, and if with young children, it's best to keep clear as a child's face level is very peckable! 3) Whilst entirely your decision we advise not to feed the geese. They find their own natural food in the grass, and human food generally tends to be bad for their digestion. Feeding also attracts seagulls. If wanting to feed them, take proper guidance on what healthy foods to give them. The geese are no one person or organisation's responsibility and are ultimately wild animals who can go or stay where they please. Please be respectful of this and ensure that they and their human visitors remain safe on Whitehaven's harbourside for years to come!
