Hall and Coates
Description
Hall and Coates is an established outdoor shop, based in the historic port of Whitby and set in the heart of the stunning North York Moors. Established as a family outdoor business in Whitby more than half a century ago, Hall and Coates is set in the shadow of the town's famous abbey among the cobbles of Church Street.
Proud of Whitby's heritage, we have retained many of the original shop fittings in this Georgian Grade II listed building, including our historic wooden counters and displays, while adding some modern touches here and there.
As the town's oldest outdoor specialists, we are the number one destination for outdoor enthusiasts, stocking everything from tent pegs and torches to wellies and walking boots.
We also stock some of the world's leading clothing brands, including Craghoppers and Fjallraven, and have recently launched a range of bushcraft accessories for all the budding Ray Mears and Bear Grylls out there.
For those who enjoy outdoor hobbies, we sell a wide variety of knives, slingshots and air rifles and we have also added archery sets and crossbows to our range.
With a passion for everything the great outdoors has to offer, our knowledgable staff are always on hand to help you make the most of Yorkshire's stunning coast, countryside and beyond.

If your stuck for something to do this weekend the Kendal mountain festival is on! I am lucky enough to be over in Ambleside for eight days training on the fells, earning some mountain craft (now fit to drop!) and immersing myself in the culture and history of Fell-running, these Cumbrian athletes are unknown to most but what they achieve is absolutely mind-blowing and jaw-dropping! Heading over to Kendal shortly to meet my favourite climber Leo Houlding who is setting problems on the climbing wall and see the Uk premier of his first ascent of the magnificent Mirror wall in remote Greenland. Also tonight will be attending the Buff endurance session with four amazing fell and trail runners, Jasmin Paris, Rob Jebb, Joe Grant and Manuela Vilaseca. Jasmin Paris (UK) alone this year has broke the women's record for the Bob Graham round (a 66 mile circuit, which includes 27,000ft of ascent over 42 of England's highest fell summits!), two months later went one better and broke the overall record for the Ramsey round (the 58-mile/28,500ft circuit of 24 Scottish mountain peaks, including Great Britain’s highest, Ben Nevis!) then after a brief interlude overseas she got a 3rd place finish at the Skyrunning World Championships, followed by a superb 6th place in her first 100-mile race; the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB). Wins at the Tromso Skyrace in Norway and Glen Coe Skyline in Scotland also landed her the Extreme Skyrunning world title, With so much running already in her legs, the Paddy Buckley (a 61-mile route over 47 Snowdonia mountain peaks incorporating 28,000ft of ascent) – was always likely to prove her biggest challenge of the year. However, such is her level of fitness, talent and determination that, as October dawned, it was of little surprise to hear that Jasmin had run the Paddy Buckley in a new women’s record time! Looking forward to hearing some of her stories tonight. Inspiration abounds in the Lakes and it is beautiful at the moment changing from amazing autumn colours to the top's being white over with snow since Thursday! See you there?

WOODSMAN- a new bushcraft knife from Casström. A classic wilderness knife designed by custom knife maker Roger Harrington, from England. The handle is made of about 5000 year old bog oak, dug from English soil. It has a rough texture and the colour tone can vary from pitch black to dark brown. Proper full-tang knife with a blade measuring approx. 9cm long , a straight and fairly round handle made to suit both large and small hands. The leather cord for the handle and a strong deep pocket leather sheath is included. The blade is made of around 4mm thick Böhler K720 high carbon tool steel to make the blade extremely durable for heavy use such as log-splitting, or so-called "batoning" without making the knife to heavy or uncomfortable to carry. The knife has a Scandinavian grind to make it very robust at the same time easy to carve wood with and easy to sharpen on a small flat whetstone/sharpener in the forest. The knife is a really good all-round tool for field use. Böhler Tool Steel K720 (O2) is a very tough and strong oil hardened high carbon tool steel. The focus of the steel is toughness and edge stability. The chemical composition allows it to be hardened to a high degree whilst maintaining ductility and toughness. This means the blade holds its edge for longer at the same time as it is resistant to chipping and cracking under heavy use. This steel also has a very fine structure making it easy to sharpen and achieve a razor sharp edge with. Whilst easy to sharpen, the low chromium content means it will tarnish if left wet and it must therefore be wiped after use and protected by oil or wax when put away for storage if you want to avoid tarnish building up. Roger Harrington is an experienced outdoorsman and knife maker who has taught Bushcraft and survival to civil and military customers for the last twenty years with his company in Sussex , England.
