(Part 2 of 2) Walsall based Metal fan Philip Walchester... . . "I’ve been lucky enough to sing in bands, tour as crew, work rock shows and rock bars, DJ and book gigs, letting me see a lot of sides to the world of rock and metal. I’ve included tour passes from Antiproduct in Europe, Blaze Bayley and some Wolves Civic passes, amongst others and flyers for one of the shows I put on at the Foundry – there’s a million more bands i’d have liked to have included, Therapy? Harpies, Farse, Cecil, Kerbdog, Kittie, Baby Chaos, Unleashed Trauma, Cellar Darling, the list would be endless ... . . As audiences get older perhaps bands have branched into supplanting shirts with mugs and then their own ales. I’m a big fan of Trooper ale and all the ranges to the present day are represented in this display. . . I’m really happy to have been able to contribute to Alan’s exhibition and to have been part of the Home of Metal and would love to do so again. Looking at other peoples collections and seeing things i’ve got, want or didn’t know existed alongside some great creative pieces has been great. I’ve filmed something that won’t be finished before the end of the exhibition but will make a nice retrospective so keep an eye out for the Homeboy of Metal video when it appears 😊 . In the meantime I have a new podcast called The Circus of Lonexome to listen out for." https://www.facebook.com/CircusofAwexome/ . . Photos: David Rowan @ The New Art Gallery Walsall

Introducing Walsall based Metal fan Philip Walchester. A selection from Phil's metal collection has been displayed in the kitchen cabinet by artist Alan Kane, as part of our '4 Bed Detached Home of Metal' (Part 1 of 2) . . "I recall vividly my parents talking about the number 1 for Xmas 1990 as being ‘slaughter your daughters’ and my Mother asking me if I would become one of those people with long hair and a leather jacket. I said ‘no’ but 3 birthdays later I was watching Iron Maiden perform ‘Bring your Daughter to the Slaughter’ at the NEC and i’ve looked back fondly since. . . My mate Mike got me into Iron Maiden when we were 14, alongside Nirvana and Guns’n’Roses and shortly thereafter everyone else was into them and Metallica in the early 90’s purple period for Rock and Metal, around the time of Ozzy’s first retirement. . . Noisy Mother/Raw Power was also a fixture on ITV and through that I got into many smaller bands like Creaming Jesus and Skyclad. After Iron Maiden at the NEC and The Almighty at Wolverhampton Civic my third gig was a local show at Edwards No.8 where River’s Edge supported Cerebral Fix. I’d go onto work at The Foundry next door and play those and most of the other venues around Birmingham with my own bands ( including Creeping Insanity, Hi-On Maiden and Wormball), when I wasn’t watching others. I was really keen to incorporate some of those smaller acts, local acts and non-current ones in the exhibition, alongside enduring favourites like The Wildhearts and look to the future with Sabaton and Devin Townsend too." . . #metalmusic #alankane #ironmaiden #blacksabbath #trooperale #ale #beerbottles #walsall #westmidlands #thenewartgallerywalsall #homeofmetaluk . . The summer bank holiday weekend is nearly here and the forecast is for lovely weather. Just a reminder that the Gallery is closed Bank Holiday Monday 26 August but will be open on Tuesday 27. This lovely summer view of Stubbers Green Pool, in Shelfield, near Walsall was drawn by Theodore Garman, the son of Jacob Epstein and Kathleen Ryan. Rosie Price, the adopted daughter of Kathleen's former nurse, Ada Newbould, and Theodore's constant companion during his visits to Walsall, evokes the scene: "Theodore's favourite walk was down the lane to Stubbers Green. On hot summer days (Rosie and Theo) enjoyed dawdling along, peeping between the reeds to spy on the ducks, coots and a pair of beautiful swans....Those were tranquil days, and even when storm clouds gathered Theo never wanted to leave." https://thenewartgallerywalsall.org.uk/ #JacobEpstein #TheodoreGarman #GarmanRyanCollection #TheNewArtGalleryWalsall #FreeAdmission ...................................................................................... Introducing Metal and Rock fan Kayleigh Archer, whose Halestorm collection is displayed at the Gallery as a bedroom. "My love of Rock & Metal music for me really began at day 1 – Birth when my dad chose to name me after a Marillion song ‘Kayleigh’ which was a big hit in the mid to late 80’s (I was born in 88). I guess you could say I was destined to love rock n roll. My earliest memory is of sitting right next to the speakers of my dad’s hi-fi listening to Guns N Roses ‘Knocking’ On Heaven’s Door’ on repeat for hours. It wasn’t until I was around 15 or 16 (when my dad had gone to a gig with his friend and I remember both of them telling me how good this band was and that the band had put on a few extra dates at Wolverhampton Civic Hall & that I HAD to listen to them because I would love them … without me even having paying attention to who they were it was a case of ‘I’VE BOUGHT YOU A TICKET YOUR COMING WITH US’ and he handed me a greatest hits cd. This band was Whitesnake. I remember instantly becoming hooked off their sound & the smooth sexy tone of Coverdale’s voice. From that moment I was hooked. On the 30th November 2004, my life changed for the better, my first ever proper rock show, all I remember really is how some of the members, Doug Aldrich & Marco Mendoza as well as David Coverdale had such a big impact on me & when I’d left I’d gone home and researched all of the other previous bands they’d been in and have continued to follow all projects they have been in since my first gig. In the last few years of Highs school myself & my friend Laura would always listen to Whitesnake on my portable cd player during break times, it was pretty cool back then. Coming from a little village just outside of Cannock, Staffordshire and being a Whitesnake fan my dad knew I’d love Glenn Hughes (who alongside Coverdale was in Deep Purple) who’s also from Cannock, small world but Glenn is one of my good friends. Since that very day, going to shows and traveling to see different bands. I came across Halestorm unexpectedly in 2010. I really loved a band called Heavens Basement (previously Roadstar & Hurricane Party). They were playing at the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton on April 6th, supporting Theory of A Deadman, So I needed to be there. Halestorm were the support also, I had never heard of them so I had no idea of what to expect. They just blew my mind, that show just changed my world. I met the band after their set and they were really lovely and positive and grateful that I’d taken time to come and talk to them, Lzzy told me that she loved how I spelt my name which was so lovely. I’ve been lucky enough to see them over 50 times live over the last 9 years, I’ve met them around the same amount of times too. I’ve been to America twice and seen them 5 times over there, which was unreal. The connection and the relationship I’ve got with Lzzy is something special. She has been the one who has been there with her music through good times and bad and with the likes of twitter and meeting her whenever I see them play, it’s a pretty awesome friendship & connection I have with her. Because of music I’ve been so so so lucky to have met such cool people & make life long friends through the bands I love, meeting up queuing from stupid hours in the morning just to get to the barrier and into the front row of that rock show. Rock n Roll is not just music it’s a way of life and a connection like nothing else." Photos: David Rowan

Introducing Metal fan Millie Millburn. . . Millie is lead singer of HAQ123 who will be back at the Gallery on Saturday 31st August, 3pm to perform at our closing event for exhibition 'Alan Kane, 4 Bed Detached Home of Metal'. . . As well as the gig, there will be mask making with Millie's mum Jo and artist Craig Earp and Metal Make-up by Red Elizabeth @Red_Eli28 to get our visitors in the mood ☠🤘 . . “Hi, My name is Millie, also known as Miller Killer from HAQ123 (a Birmingham Heavy Metal band). I am 10 years old and I love collecting skulls and rocks. I started my collection at 5 years old, and I have been adding to it ever since. My love of skulls started when I was 2 years old when I would never have any face painting done unless it was a pirate or a skull. My latest skull was found at Supernormal Festival (when we played), in a forest, it is a real goat skull that was under a tree. . . My hobbies are football, acting, art, guitar and singing, I like singing in my band because I enjoy it and when I sing I rock out, which is really fun to do and I hope you can do that with me when I play my gig in my bedroom in the Home Of Metal, Walsall exhibition. . . A few months ago I sprayed my room, and it has been copied into the gallery and my bedroom has been replicated. I spray painted my room with a friend called Craig, Craig is a brilliant artist and inspires me to do more art, so he helped create the galaxy mural and alien monsters, and now he is going to help you create monsters masks at our workshop on the 31st August So, please come over and check my band out, thank you to Craig and my mum Jo for setting up the workshop and thank you to Dave and Zac for playing this special gig ” . .
