facebook.comMisty landscapes are the subject of this month's weekly classes so this morning I've been preparing. Painting mist (and other atmospheric conditions) in watercolour relies on two main things: firstly, and always most importantly, tone. The more mist (fog, rain etc), the lighter the tones will be and the tones should be close to one another on your tone chart. Secondly, and this is something many people forget, watch your edges! Some will be hard, some soft, and some "lost and found". All this really means is use water to soften your edges (like a simple graded wash) and you will get atmosphere in your work. My little painting here is of Hedingham Castle. The 900 year old Norman Keep stands in 160 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens and woodland together with a Georgian mansion house in the village of Castle Hedingham in Essex. . As usual my paints are professional quality tubes made by Winsor & Newton My paper is #Bockingford 140lb NOT, stretched paper made by Kim St Cuthberts Mill
This old post box is one of many unfinished paintings I've been working on! But can you guess where this one is? I'll give you a clue - it's in one of the villages around the Sudbury (Suffolk, UK) villages...

Eleanor Mann paints at The Old Bank Studio Harwich
Following the success of my "Beginners to watercolour" workshop at The Old Bank Studio in Harwich, I have been invited back to do a "Follow-on" workshop. I will be doing a step-by-step demonstration of these two paintings. They are FUN to paint and would be suitable for both beginners and those wishing to improve existing watercolour skills. Please read my blog post for further details and how to book your place.
Simple graded watercolour washes create form; in this case water droplets. Someone once told me that by continually helping others learn to paint I would not progress as an artist. I disagree. Whilst by no means perfect, practice pieces like this are essential. Painting is NOT like learning to riding a bike, you have to keep practicing your existing skills otherwise you lose them. "Practise what you know and it will help to make clear what now you do not know" As usual my paints are professional quality tubes made by Winsor & Newton My paper is Bockingford 140lb NOT, paper made by St Cuthberts Mill

When you get immediate (and positive) feedback after a watercolour and Brusho workshop ... 😃
I've been working on a new watercolour painting in preparation for two workshops on Summer Flowers this month. Using just 3 tubes of paint I will demonstrate how to mix colour (with the emphasis on mixing realistic greens) and use the wet-into-wet technique to create a variety of edges - soft, hard and lost and found. One workshop is fully booked but there are 2 places available on the 10th July, 10am-4pm. Contact me if you're interested in joining us - a small, friendly group with plenty of individual help.
