WHCC-The Watch House Cruising Club Appreciation Page
Description
Welcome to the WHCC The Watch House Cruising Club, is on the towpath side of the Bridgewater Canal between Dane Road bridge and Edge Lane bridge in Stretford, Greater Manchester, it was founded in 1964 and has grown in size over the years.
Watch House was the fifth club to join the Federation of Bridgewater Cruising Clubs. It operates a full cruising programme throughout the year with many weekend cruises and attendance at various rallies during the season. When not out cruising, the clubrooms and bar are open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings 19.30-23.30 as well as Sunday afternoons 12.00-19.00 to all passing boaters.
The Watch House is the oldest building in Stretford, also the oldest on the canal and was, in fact, here before the canal was built. In those days it was a farm building but since then it has had a chequered history as stables for canal horses, as a coffin store, saddle manufacturing, cottages and now our club premises. Gradually the members have improved the building and upgraded the facilities. The major improvments undertaken over the past few years have been the extension into the old stable block, which has been turned into a concert room with a stage and a refit to the kitchen area. Apart from the bar, the services available are toilets, water, Elsan disposal, overnight moorings and a fund of help and advice from our many long serving members.

facebook.comDear Fellow Bridgewater Boaters From Friday 4th of May to Sunday 6th of May the Watch House Cruising Club will be holding an open weekend. We would like to invite your club members along for the Friday evening and/or the Saturday afternoon/evening. If you have a club cruise on that weekend it would be great if you could arrange to stop off at the Watch House as part of your cruise either on your outward journey or on your return. There is plenty of mooring space on the tow path side near to the club house. There will be food available on Friday and Saturday evenings 7pm-9pm and breakfasts will be available from 9-10.30 on Saturday and Sunday mornings. On the Friday evening there will be entertainment from our resident DJ George and the opportunity to take part in Killer Pool and Darts. After breakfast on Saturday there will be a dog friendly walk around Sale Water Park for those interested and a craft table for children (of any age!) in the afternoon. For the Saturday evening we have arranged a singer to entertain us. The usual raffles, tombola and football cards will take place over the weekend. There will be a short walk again on the Sunday after breakfast for those feeling energetic. We hope to see you all at some point over the weekend and it would be helpful if you could let Di know on di@whccstretford.com when you are aiming to call in and approximately how many boats there will be. We look forward to seeing as many of you who can make it.
Social and Cruise News Thursday 29th March, our second social do, killer pool and darts on the Thursday evening and up and away Friday morning to Stockton Heath (aiming to leave 10ish), any additional shopping for the BBQ, maybe a pint in the London Bridge and then Saturday off through Walton through the tunnels and arriving at the breach easily recognizable with the great view and the concrete embankment very similar to the narrows in Dunham. BBQ Saturday evening and then back to Lymm Sunday for the evening returning to the club on the bank holiday Monday. There will be a booking form in the club until close of play Wednesday 28th this gives us an idea of numbers should we decide to do food on the Thursday evening and the option of buying BBQ food in advance (expected cost of £3.00 per person). I hope you all can make it and look forward to seeing you then. If you aren't in the club this weekend but still are wanting to come on the cruise please either phone the club and someone there can put you on the booking form or e mail me Many thanks, Phil
This was on the AWCC forum this morning. Worthwhile advice for all. There are a weather warnings including two severe warnings. There will be lots of snow falling on boats and that means that, for those living on board, there will likely be blocked ventilators on roofs and against doors/bulkheads at lower levels at the same time heating appliances will be on continuously. These boaters could be at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning and they may not even notice it. We’ve been on social media trying to alert people to the potential risk. We’re also trying to reach boaters who see a neighbouring boat that has snow blocking ventilators and is in obvious use e.g. smoke coming out the chimney, heat haze out of the gas heater terminal. We would like to call on community spirit to pass the message on to those boaters about the potential danger. They may not be aware of our Twitter and Facebook alerts. The additional advice is that they should test carbon monoxide alarms as the ‘belt and braces’ back up.
For info: Engineers have puddled adjacent to the mooring gate and have put dye at the far end where coping is missing , the source of the leak is still not found. Until then can people make sure that engines are not run in gear while moored up.
There is an extra work party on Feb 17th for a general tidy up if anyone is able to make it. General Member's meeting still on Feb 18th at 11.00 am
Thank you all who came and helped out for the Worsley visit on Boxing day. It was great. Next event: New Year's eve, 7.30 till late the club house will be open. Bring food along if you can and there will be a disco thanks to George and Beth. HAPPY NEW YEAR
The engineer is coming down tomorrow to look at the leak again. Please don't moor on or near the aqueduct for now. Thank you. Worsley will be visiting on Boxing Day so join us for lunch if you can.
