John Ellis Photography
Description
John is based in Strathpeffer, Ross-Shire have had an interest in photography for many years. When I was about 7 or 8 I was given an old Kodak compact to take on holiday to the Isle of Harris in the Scottish Outer Hebridean Islands. My Grandparents lived on the Luskentyre peninsula and I spent many happy summers helping on the croft, playing on the beach and learning about nature. As my interest in photography grew I can remember the excitement of getting the photos back from the developers to see the results. Unfortunately the results weren't always the best. I can remember the disappointment when my grandfather was only half in one of the pictures I had taken. Thankfully, things have improved since then!
I was born in the Scottish Border town of Lanark and was raised and went to school in Biggar. At the .age of 20 I met my wife Debbie who at the time was moving to Spain with her parents and I had the opportunity to go along, and I wasn't going to turn it down. We lived in San Roque and La Linea on the Costa del Sol whilst commuting every day to work in Gibraltar. It was while living here I became more interested in photography and joined the Gibraltar Camera society which was a great learning experience.
We moved back to Scotland in 1997 and headed North to Strathpeffer, in the Highlands where we have stayed ever since. Living where I do is a great central location for travelling to some of Scotland’s stunning scenery.
After moving back to Scotland I had less time for photography while I concentrated on starting up a cleaning business and buying a home. It was only 5 years ago I decided to pick up the camera again and bought a Minolta 700si to help me along. That year I had bought my wife a digital compact for a birthday present, tried it out for myself and was instantly converted.
As the Lens kit from the Minolta fitted Sony DSL’s it was the obvious choice so I purchased the Sony Alpha a100 and upgraded last year to the a550. I’m currently concentrating on upgrading my lenses and hopefully a pro spec camera body next year. For processing the images i use Photoshop elements 10 and occasionally i use Dynamic pro HDR.
Hopefully you enjoy looking through the galleries and something holds your interest. Why not add my site to your favourites so you can return in the future to see my new work as it is added? New images are added and the site is updated on a regular basis so please call again or I might see you out and about at one of the fairs and events I’ll be attending this year.
