Been a wee while since I posted anything but sometimes no news is good new! Certainly in this case :) At present we are seeing an increase in activity over the last 2 weeks, with the latest cold snap and potential rain, this has force rodents to seek alternative shelter and warmth. If you hear noises in your loft space or walls I would encourage you to act on the matter, furthermore I would also encourage people to ensure their homes are well proofed to keep any uninvited guests out! Rodents are attracted to food and shelter; to discourage them I would recommend the following: - Bird feeders, I would advise against them as there will be a good chance you are feeding more than the birds - Chickens & Ducks, they are a magnet to rodents, the feed and water you provide them will also be welcomed by rodents. I would also advice to be careful with the storage of feeds and recommend the use of steel bins etc. Also take in or restrict the feeders & water overnight to help reduce the chances of attracting them. - Wheelie and Composts Bins, shelter and food in one spot, perfect for them. Pay attention to any damage to the bins, rodents can also chew through most things so plastic bins lids etc. can easily be gnawed away and if your bins are overflowing then this will certainly attract attention! - Garden Area's, remove all clutter and possible harbourage areas, they are attracted to woodpiles, ponds and sheds. Furthermore, they are keen on peat stacks and garden decking so I would keep an eye out! - DIY Poisons & Traps, please be careful with them as its not only the rodents you can kill. Secondary poisoning and non-target species is the result of people being careless with poisons. Bed bugs' thick skins beat insecticide - BBC News

Staying in a hotel or hostel this year - I would suggest checking up on the reviews before booking, last year we had multiple call outs for Bedbugs whom had hitched a ride home with the unfortunate holidays goes. Things to look for, check over the bed seams and folds / buttons in the mattress - if you find small black or brown dots then beware. They can also hide in numerous places within the room including bedside furniture and even inside electricity sockets! Heavy activity can also give off a almond smell. Certainly not the most pleasant topic to speak about and not wanting to scare anyone however please be vigilant while on your travels - one customer described them as having Midges in your bedroom! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-36037823
