https://www.kumon.co.uk/blog/headteacher-shares-kumon-benefited-pupil-premium-students/ An interesting presentation about the collaboration between a Kumon centre and a school. How wonderful to hear from a headteacher about the difference the Kumon programmes have made to some of her pupils.

At our recent presentation day one of our older students, Serge Ayao, delivered an encouraging speech to parents and students. Here is a transcript of his speech. "Before I came to Kumon I was a very cocky student who believed top grades could be achieved with the least effort. However, this changed for me when I was put down from the top to the bottom maths set of my grammar school in year 9 - just under 3 years ago. My parents were really annoyed as they correctly believed I was dropped because I wasn’t applying myself hence I started at Kumon. When I began Kumon my attitude was poor. I was lazy believing the work to be pointless but over the course of my first year I started developing self discipline. The learning process at Kumon was very different to the tutoring I had been used to. Instead of weekly exercises I was now working on maths daily and without necessarily someone to teach me as Kumon develops your self learning skills. After my first year of Kumon my school life had changed dramatically. I started year 10 in the top maths set, my overall effort in other subjects also greatly improved. In just one year of learning at Kumon I had changed into a different person with self discipline, determination and independence. Now that I have started year 12 these skills are benefitting me greatly. I am studying 5 A levels - maths, further maths, physics, chemistry and biology. To be honest I believe if I hadn’t started at Kumon I would never have considered taking 5 A levels or even retained my place at Southend High School for Boys. I therefore believe Kumon benefits all children whatever their age. I am now 16 and still attend Kumon as I believe Kumon is the greatest learning resource I have found. I thank Alison and the Kumon team for supporting me through my learning over the past 3 years." Well done Serge - we are thrilled Kumon has enabled you to achieve top grades in your exams too.
