A time before the multi-coloured options in the Plaster room... We only have the name of Charge Nurse R Strefford - do you know who the Staff Nurse is? #SaTHThroughTheYears #ThrowbackThursday #TBT
Our latest #FacesofSaTH is Jessica Brazier, an Audiology Assistant Technical Officer. Jess has worked at the Trust for 10 years – spending the first 8 of those years in Head and Neck Outpatients, before an opportunity arose in the Audiology team. Now, her role involves being responsible for hearing aid repairs, maintenance and aftercare clinics. With ambition to pursue a career in Audiology and specialise in Dementia Care, Jess says the best part of her job is having the ability to improve the quality of life for patients. “If a patient is having difficulties with their hearing aid, then it is my role to identify a solution. Since being in post I have attended conferences for Dementia Care and feel very passionate about promoting this within Audiology”. Outside of work, Jess is a keen photographer, who enjoys exploring, travelling and capturing everything along the way, especially during weekend trips to the Peak District and Yorkshire.

*IMPORTANT MESSAGE* The following is a joint statement from Dr Edwin Borman, Medical Director, Deirdre Fowler, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality and Sara Biffen, Interim Chief Operating Officer: “People will be aware of reports across the national media about the considerable difficulties that the NHS as a whole is experiencing this winter. “As we have publicised recently, The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) – like many other hospital trusts – is experiencing very high numbers of patients presenting at our two Emergency Departments at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) and the Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford, as well as a high number of admissions, meaning that all of our Ward areas are full. “Our staff are working incredibly hard under what are very difficult circumstances, but the number of patients we are seeing means that there are long delays in seeing patients in our Emergency Departments, and in helping patients on our Wards. “There has been a national recommendation that elective surgery and Outpatient clinics should be cancelled until the end of this month. At SaTH, we intend to review, on a week-by-week basis, elective operations and elective clinics. We will, however, ensure that patients requiring urgent assessment and treatment continue to be seen as a priority, as will patients requiring assessment and treatment for cancer and other potentially life-changing conditions. “These decisions will be made in consultation with clinicians, including our doctors and nurses. “Anyone who has their elective procedure cancelled will be contacted by the Trust. “We would like to apologise for these exceptional measures but, given the considerable pressures our two hospitals are facing, we have to ensure that we prioritise the care of urgent and emergency patients.”

#SaTHthroughTheYears Filming of a snowy scene for 'A Christmas Carol' at the Royal Salop Infirmary in 1984. Another #tbt# fact is that the 'fake' grave of Ebeneezer Scrooge, as in the film, can still be found in St Chad's Church in Shrewsbury. The headstone is not a "prop" but an actual period headstone, on which the original inscription had deteriorated to the point that the movie production people asked the church if they could use it and inscribe the "Ebenezer Scrooge" words on it. #tbt #ThrowbackThursday #SaTHThroughTheYears

This week’s Face of SaTH is Medical Performance Manager Sam Hooper. Sam, who has worked in the Trust for 29 years, says the most enjoyable part of her role is “working with great people. We are very lucky at SaTH to have such exceptional and dedicated people at all levels of the organisation. I am also a ILM7 accredited Executive Coach and really enjoy helping and supporting the great staff in our Trust.” When asked what it would be if she could learn anything, Sam answered “I love learning, and do continue to develop my skills. Since completing my Coaching qualification four years ago, I have qualified as a Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner and I have just completed my Reiki Practitioner qualification. I am thinking about my next thing to learn…. so watch this space! I believe continued learning and self-awareness throughout life is very important.” Outside of work, Sam owns lots of animals including a cat, a goldfish, horses, dogs, ducks and a herd of cattle! She says her passion is her horse, Blondie, who at 26 years old still enjoys his time doing dressage, a little bit of jumping, fun rides, hacking and much more. “If I won the lottery tomorrow I would set up a rescue centre for all sorts of animals. I have always loved animals and when I was a child I always wanted to be a vet.”
IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR TUESDAY 12 DECEMBER 2017 Services at our two hospital sites will return back to normal on Tuesday following some cancellations on Monday. We would like to thank members of the public for their co-operation, and inform those that were unable to attend appointments on Monday 11 December that they WILL NOT receive a "Did not attend” mark on their record. This means that you will be contacted shortly with a re-booking of your appointment. The decision to cancel appointments on Monday was taken due to a combination of factors including advice from emergency services for people not to travel unless absolutely necessary, limiting traffic coming onto the hospital sites and due to some members of staff struggling to get into work. However, after a review of services many appointments will go ahead on Tuesday as planned. Debbie Kadum, Chief Operating Officer at SaTH, said: “Outpatient appointments and routine procedures will be proceeding as normal, as far as possible. It may be necessary for us to cancel some appointments, but we will contact any patients who are affected in plenty of time. “If you have not been contacted, you should assume your appointment is going ahead as planned. If you have any questions, please contact us using the number on your appointment letter. “We appreciate that not everybody will be able to get to our hospitals on Tuesday and there will be some people who do not want to travel. If you can’t make your appointment, please contact us as soon as possible to let us know." The adverse weather has led to the suspension of births and other inpatient services at Shrewsbury Midwife Led Unit (MLU). The heavy snow has caused damage to part of the roof on the unit, and as a result, the delivery suites have had to be closed. It unfortunately means that the MLU will not be open to deliveries or postnatal inpatients. Services are expected to be suspended until mid- to late-January. The MLU will remain open to outpatient services including day attendees, hearing screening and the registrar. All women who are due to have their baby at the MLU in Shrewsbury have been notified, and calls have been diverted so that women will have 24/7 access to a midwife. Anyone in labour will be asked to make their way to either Wrekin Midwife Led Unit or the Consultant Led Unit at Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford. Community midwifery including home births are unaffected. Jo Banks, Women and Children’s Care Group Director at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), said: “The extreme weather conditions have caused damage to part of the roof and as a result we have unfortunately had to temporarily suspend all of our in-patient services at the MLU, including deliveries. Our estates team is currently assessing the extent of the damage, and we are working with them to ensure that repairs are carried out as soon as they can be. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience or distress that this may cause.” Please share this post with everyone, and thank you for your continued support!
