Prof Peter O'Sullivan and Core Stability - April 2012

Another week and yet more patients with chronic low back pain driven by their fear of their low back and abnormal habits such as excessive abdominal bracing eading to increased trunk stiffness and pain. Core stability is a myth derived from poorly interpreted science. People with chronic low back pain often over tense their abdominal muscles and clinicians prompting 'core activation' exercises (such as the classic 'draw your belly button in and tense your pelvic floor') do nothing more than promote abnormal movements and behaviours. Fortunately the field is slowly changing and the core fad will eventually die out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YezBG_NdLgs #osteopathy #physiotherapy #chiropractic #core #corestability

"Playing the lottery is a form of tax for those who do not understand mathematics." A great quote from an online stats course I am doing with the University of Cape town!

I am a big fan of games that encourage people to get more physical activity. That's why I am impressed by Pokemon Go. The free mobile app gets you outside wandering the streets. The further you walk the more you get rewarded. Children should be encouraged to play it as it is a big weapon against childhood obesity. But from what I have seen it might do the same for adults! On Friday I saw a number of suits playing it in the City and as it turns out, I appear to live near a Pokemon 'gym'... At midnight last night I counted 5 teenagers stop there and then move off elsewhere after a short break! I take my hat off to you #Nintendo/#niantic #physiotherapy #sportsmedicine #osteopathy #Pokemon #pokemongo

Did anyone see Ronaldo's injury the other day? Turns out it was quite serious. I haven't read anything official but from the below picture he has certainly sustained a serious injury. Almost certainly a medial collateral ligament injury with a possible meniscal and anterior cruciate damage too. Ouch. Here's me thinking he was just attacked by a moth (those that watched it will understand!). #sportsmedicine #osteopathy #physiotherapy

How stress affects your brain - Madhumita Murgia

Great video about how stress affects the brain. Many of my patients problems are entirely or in part driven by stress and maladaptive behaviours... Often driven by abnormal belief systems such as a "lack of core stability" or a feeling of vulnerability surrounding normal MRI findings (such as a degenerative disc) or having been previously told that they have a twisted pelvis. Add other stressors in and you get pain! #osteopathy #physiotherapy
