Malcolmson Architecs (formerly Redman  Sutherland Architects) were established in May 2000 in Scalloway's Main Street. The current directors, Iain and Suzanne Malcolmson, joined the practice in 2006. Andrew Hunter trained as an architectural technician through Shetland College, graduating in 2007, Janice Hamer, our office manager, joined us in 2008 and Colin Sim in 2017.

The practice has gone from strength to strength in the past decade to become one of the largest architectural firms in Shetland.

We believe careful listening to the client is the foundation of a successful project. Fresh thinking and creativity are injected at the design stage to gain maximum value for the client.

The office is committed to sustainable, energy saving practices and innovative design based on experience gained from working locally, on the mainland and abroad. Our aim is to respond to the challenges of the 21st century with buildable and practical solutions to provide places that people enjoy living in.

After two years of work the design team led by Malcolmson Architects have published the final draft proposals for the North Staneyhill Masterplan in Lerwick. The proposal is for 300 new homes on the site constructed in 4 character areas over a period of ten years. Preparing a masterplan is less about building houses than creating communities and throughout the process we have tried very hard to firstly listen and then to incorporate the comments from our previous consultations throughout the design process. We hope that our proposals will provide a strong guide that will enable the creation of a new and vibrant area to live in Lerwick. This announcement marks the beginning of the 6 week Shetland Islands Council consultation period. The full proposal documents are available to view in the Shetland Library, SIC Planning Department in Train Shetland, Gremista and online on the SIC Planning website where you can leave your comments. Please fee free to share this post to reach as many people as possible.

Some of you may have seen in today's Shetland Times that we have an advertising feature which explains something new at RSA. Now that Jim has retired we felt that it was time for a change. Now that there is no Mr Redman and no Mr Sutherland with us in the practice, we have changed our name to Malcolmson Architects. What we haven't changed is that we will still be providing our high quality Architectural service from our offices here in Scalloway. I hope you will come along for the ride and continue following us on facebook.
