Holocaust Memorial Day Holocaust Memorial Day falls on 27th January. It marks the liberation of Auschwitz and memorializes the 11 million Jews and other minority groups who were killed during the Holocaust in Europe during WW11. It also commemorates the victims of all other genocides, including Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. On Sanquhar Academy’s Holocaust Memorial, we lay stones each year. In the Jewish tradition, stones are laid on tombs. Unlike flowers, which represent the transience of life, stones do not die and are therefore a good symbol of remembrance. This year’s theme is The Power of Words. Our School Captains Ellie Stewart and Ethan Weir laid this year’s stone, lit a candle and read the famous poem (below) by Pastor Martin Niemöller, ‘First They Came’. Our Mentors in Violence Protection Programme at school has the motto ‘The standard you walk past is the standard you accept’. See something say something. Words have power. First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me. By Pastor Martin Niemöller
