Saltash Town Band
Description
Saltash Town Band is a brass band based in Saltash known as the Gateway to Cornwall. We always welcome new members of all ages and any instrument.
Saltash Town Band was originally formed in 1919 after the First World War, at the Working Men's Club in Saltash. The band was active until the outbreak of the Second World War. Unfortunately, all the band's instruments and equipment were placed on a barge moored in the River Tamar and were lost during a bombing raid!
It was not until 1974 that moves were made to reform the band. This entailed much fund raising to buy new instruments, music and other equipment. The first rehearsal of the newly formed band was held on 18th June 1975, which is now regarded as the band's birthday.
Under the baton of David Dobson, the band were Cornish Fourth Section Champions in 2001, winning their section at the Cornwall Brass Band Association contest held in the Hall for Cornwall in Truro. They also became West of England Fourth Section Champions in the same year, winning their section at the regional contest held in Torquay, and enjoyed a well deserved seventh place in the national finals held in Preston.
As a consequence of a successful training programme for beginners, a Youth Band was formed in February 2002. This was followed by the introduction of training and beginners bands the following summer, thus giving opportunities for players of all levels.
As with many lower section bands, we have lost a number of young players to College and higher section bands over the last few months, and wish them all well. We spent a very busy 2005 re-building under the baton of the very well respected and talented Robert Julian and enjoyed a very busy summer programme, especially the band's 30TH BIRTHDAY celebrations which were held at the end of July 2005.
October 2007, the Band formed an Ensemble.
December 2009 the Band formed a Facebook Supporters Group.
February 2010 the Band were really pleased to announce the reforming of the Training Band.
February 2011 the new Junior Band gave their first public performance at the Saltash Music Festival. They then went on to win the Peter Stephens award at the May Fair in 2011. This award is given to the musical group that best entertains the Mayor. A great achievement.
The Junior Band won their first SWBBA contest in November 2012, as well as best instrumentalist. Both awards were retained in November 2013.
