St Kew Historical Society Proudly Presents Our Annual Return visit of special guest Mr Paul Holden House and Collections Manager Lanhydrock House (courtesy of National Trust Bodmin) Thursday November 9th, 2017 With a talk on -19th century Cornish Architect Richard Coad of Liskeard Richard Coad (13 February 1825 – 1 November 1900) was a 19th-century Cornish architect.[1] Born in Liskeard, Cornwall, he was articled to Henry Rice of Liskeard and subsequently worked as assistant to Sir George Gilbert Scott from 1847 to 1864.[1] He was clerk of works on the Albert Memorial in London,[2] and worked under Scott's supervision on improvements to Lanhydrock House near Bodmin in 1857. He returned to Liskeard in 1864 to open his own independent practice, and opened a London office in 1868.[1] Of Great Local Interest this promises to be a fascinating evening =================================== Our most recent talk was Thursday 12th October 2017. 7.30pm Given by Local Historian and raconteur Mr Terry Faull A very well attended illustrated talk on The Domesday Book in Devon and Cornwall Our guest gave a most interesting lecture on the genesis of the Great Survey of the Kingdom ordered by William 1st. (the Conqueror), the reasons he required this (mainly for taxation and proof of his power), the speed in which it was carried out and the detail it contained Later known as the “Domesday Book” as it was considered valid and irrefutable until the end of time (Dooms Day), and was used as reference in a case of land dispute in the 1960s The Great survey can be viewed in its original form and in translation on various web sites- well worth a look We welcomed once again on their annual visit to North Cornwall Mr Jim and Mrs Jill Dagg from Toronto Canada, representing the Toronto Cornwall Association, always a pleasure to see them. ------------------ Look out for Future Events!
