I provide a range of services from set ups to structural and electrical repairs as well as fretwork, modifications and bespoke handmade parts and pickups. I've been modifying and repairing instruments for the last 5 years as well as designing and building instruments and pickups over the last 3 years.

In that time I've worked on a wide range of instruments from acoustic and electric guitars and basses to banjos. I've performed structural and electrical repairs as well as modifications to wiring, hardware and the instruments themselves. I also make nuts and saddles from scratch (or bone, usually).

Whatever your needs, I can help, from a set up to fretwork, structural repairs and modifications, wiring modifications or even custom parts and pickups.

Had this fine Jazzmaster in the workshop this week for a setup and a little attention at the nut. Great sounding guitar, especially when it's being played in WEEKEND WARS.

This poor guitar has been waiting two years for a finish. First coat down, the wait will be over soon.

I've been breaking in the new workbench! Having had a nice stout bench to work from for the last few weeks it was time to get started on a project I'd been planning since April. I like a bit of old Country music now and then, especially the pedal steel guitar. As I don't have the metalworking equipment to make all the mechanisms for a pedal steel I decided to go for the less complex lap steel. The key specifications are a 23" scale length, hand wound pickup and the whole thing is made of pine scrap I had left over from building the workbench. The bridge and tuners are from a cheap Telecaster copy I bought to experiment on years ago. When I make another I'll be using much higher quality hardware. While there is still some sanding and inlay to complete, the main build process only took 5 days so I'll cover some of the details of the build over the next few days and record some audio samples. If you're interested in making an instrument yourself, something like this is a good project to start with.

At last, a solid workbench for some serious work. Over the years I've worked on instruments using a variety of different work surfaces, from my knees, beds, ironing boards to a sheet of MDF clamped to a Workmate (the trestle, not a friend). The new dedicated work space demanded a dedicated and dependable work surface. After a some jitters making the first saw cuts, a few false starts and a trip to the local medical centre (honestly) I've finally got a place to work that doesn't require any compromise of technique and stands its ground to the heavy work. It's also a much bigger space to hoard tools, though I've tidied and organised most of them recently.
