Nick and Louise Male successfully ran The Larder restaurant for five years in Clerkenwell, London.
Award-winning chef Nick was previously an executive chef for Conran Restaurants and Head of Food Development for Harrods. He was Head Chef of the acclaimed Leodis and Paris restaurants in Leeds.

Interesting article..... I'm sure no restaurant wants to take deposits - it would put people off booking and be an admin nightmare. But no shows are an increasing problem. We have several no shows most weekend evenings. Guests book, we confirm with them then they don't show up. Sometimes they don't answer their phone when we call and one group of six who were late told me they were around the corner - but never found their way to us! I hope they got home ok. The problem is small restaurants get fully booked at peak times then turn away other potential guests. On the night, when you realise there are no shows, it's too late to take any more bookings. (Some restaurants don't get many walk-ins). Moral of the story is, please cancel if your plans change and secondly, don't be put off calling a restaurant last minute to see if they have a table.
