It’s been 1 year since we opened the cafe here in Fishersgate and it has now come to an end. We’ve really enjoyed our time here, all of our customers have been so lovely and supportive. We did not want to leave so soon but unfortunately council officials have made it impossible for us to operate since the beginning (one official in particular).. Before signing our lease last year we were promised lots of support from the council & community centre and nothing has lived up to expectation. It’s a real shame to leave the centre without a cafe particularly at this time of year so I offered the council a proposal, I offered to stay until the end of September for the good of the community but unsurprisingly they were not at all interested. We would have loved to put on a big leaving celebration family fun day was the thought but this one council official has told me I’m “not to put on any events, that should be left for the voluntary & charity groups that are great at running events”, I agree they are great at running events, but the cafe needs regular events throughout the summer, if not every weekends then at least one per month? As a business it’s impossible for us to forecast a profit without having these big events scheduled throughout the summer. It’s sad to say but as long as this council official is in charge of the building she’ll run it into the ground, she has shown many signs that she has no interest in the cafe/centre being successful here. It’s such a shame as really does have huge potential Finally I would like to add that our Café in Peacehaven is still operating and thriving, this shows how a cooperative council makes so much difference to the success of a business like this.
