Golf club Founded in 1903 History of Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club

It was in 1902 that Mr CL Orr Ewing MP, owner of the Dunskey Estates, realised the possibilities open to Portpatrick and set about the provision of a Golf Course. In the Autumn of that year he surveyed the ground with Mr Charles Hunter, of Prestwick. The Club - Dunskey Golf Club - was opened in April of the following year, 1903, extending to over 100 acres.

In 1912 the facility was extended to form what was then a ladies course, a nine-hole, par 3s, which is now called the DINVIN COURSE ; a fair test for regular and holiday golfers alike.

The club is now known as Portpatrick Dunskey Golf Club and it celebrated its Centenary in 2003. Since inception, the course and clubhouse have been gradually extended and improved, and a new extension to the clubhouse was completed to mark the Centenary.

JUNIORS
Portpatrick has one of the fastest growing junior sections in Scotland.

During May, Portpatrick Golf Club allows juniors to “come and try” at no cost. Beginners may play the Dinvin (9-hole course) while juniors with a handicap of 24 or lower may play the Dunskey Course.

One of the most progressive moves of our recent history has been the introduction of the “Blue Course”. This is a properly measured course within the Dunskey course that gives juniors a feel of the “big” course without its exhausting length. Because it is a measured course, it can be used for handicapping purposes.

During the beginner’s early days, some emphasis is given to rules, etiquette and safety.

Girls may also play in Ladies competitions when they reach the required level. For a junior to obtain a handicap, he/she must submit three cards signed by an adult or a junior who already possesses a handicap.

Juniors will receive coaching from professionals Chris Robinson & Stuart Fisher. There will be various groups and sizes involved, depending on playing ability. A junior who demonstrates potential and a willingness to learn is likely to be selected for further coaching.
